Speaking at a launch event for the series, Macfadyen explained to RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press how there is a subtle connective tissue between his Stonehouse<\/a> and Succession roles.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a bit of cross pollination, I suppose,\u201d he began. \u201cThey\u2019re a long way from each other, but they both like the trappings of power and being near power.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd both are sort of out of their depth. So there was stuff to be mined, which is similar: two sorts of grotesques.\u201d<\/p> However, Macfadyen went on to say that there is \u201csomething very sympathetic\u201d about Stonehouse, which couldn\u2019t easily be said about Wambsgans.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was very personable, by all accounts very lovely to be with, and funny and quite charismatic,\u201d he said of Stonehouse. \u201cBut also, he wasn\u2019t without vanity and he liked the trappings of his position the more success he had in party politics.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is that vanity that you spot, certainly in politicians. I think because it\u2019s the nature of the job, they\u2019re sort of insulated a bit and it\u2019s sort of a powerful position.\u201d<\/p>\n Macfadyen added: \u201cThere\u2019s an aphrodisiac element to that and an inability to sort of change tack or jump off, I suppose.\u201d<\/p>\n Stonehouse sees Macfadyen share the screen with his real-life wife Keeley Hawes<\/a>, who plays Barbara Stonehouse, while relative newcomer Emer Heatley plays the politician\u2019s mistress Sheila Buckley.<\/p>\n Stonehouse premieres on ITV1 at 9pm on Monday 2nd January 2023.
