Although the hit drama last aired five years ago, Sherlock\u2019s future could be a hopeful one after all.<\/p>\n

Series creator Steven Moffat spoke about the popular programme while promoting his debut West End play The Unfriend on this morning\u2019s BBC Today programme.<\/p>\n

The former Doctor Who show runner, who revealed that\u00a0he has \u201cjust started talking about\u201d a second season of his recent BBC drama Inside Man<\/a>, also said\u00a0that he would \u201cstart writing Sherlock tomorrow\u201d if Benedict Cumberbatch<\/a> and Martin Freeman ever agreed to return for another season.<\/p>\n

He joked: \u201cThey\u2019re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?\u201d<\/p>

The fourth and final season of Sherlock, which aired in 2017, concluded with The Final Problem, a gripping episode that saw Holmes (Cumberbatch) finally confront his evil sister and Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) \u2013 but fans of the acclaimed detective series have been left wondering just when they can expect a new season to ever land on their screens.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an exclusive interview at the Radio Times Covers Party<\/strong><\/a>, Moffat said<\/a>\u00a0he\u2019d \u201cdo Sherlock again tomorrow, why ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cMark [Gatiss] would do it tomorrow, Sue [Vertue, producer] would do it tomorrow \u2013 we\u2019d all just do it again.\u00a0It\u2019s down to Benedict and Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Playing Holmes\u2019s loyal friend John Watson, Freeman<\/a> appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show in November 2022 where he admitted that he doesn\u2019t know whether Sherlock will ever return to screens, but said \u201cit\u2019s never a completely shut door\u201d.<\/p>\n

He has most recently starred in The Responder<\/a> and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/a>, while Cumberbatch was last seen on the big screen as Dr Stephen Strange in Marvel\u2019s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for now, fans of Moffat can see his play The Unfriend when it begins its run in London\u2019s Criterion Theatre next week.<\/p>\n
