In the world of mind-bending series, Netflix<\/a>\u2018s 1899<\/a> was set to be a surefire hit. It kept viewers guessing, was home to some truly stellar performances<\/a>, and even left us with questions and cliffhangers aplenty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s safe to say that fans of the show are more than a little surprised at the news of the series being cancelled. After just one season, the German thriller<\/a> has been given the red light.\u00a0The news was confirmed by series co-creator Baran bo Odar through a statement shared to his official Instagram<\/a>\u00a0yesterday (January 2nd).<\/p>\n

He wrote: \u201cWith a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don\u2019t turn out the way you planned. That\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The series followed an immigrant steamer ship, the Kerberos, as it embarked on a trip to a new world \u2013 until it came across a mysterious other ship, the Prometheus. The series came from the creators of acclaimed German science fiction thriller <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/dark-season-2-netflix-release-date-plot-cast-trailer-season-1-explained\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Dark<\/a> \u2013 arguably one of the best Netflix original series to ever stream on the platform \u2013 Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.<\/p>\n<p>Despite 1899 being widely critically acclaimed and ranking highly in Netflix\u2019s top 10 charts consistently upon its release, it wasn\u2019t enough to save the series. Following the announcement, an impassioned fan has started a <a href=\"\/\/www.change.org\/p\/renew-1899-on-netflix"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">Change.org petition<\/a> calling on Netflix to renew the drama. At the time of writing, the petition has amassed nearly 16,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind,\u201d the petition\u2019s bio reads. \u201cAfter the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.\u201d<\/p> <p>One of the stars of the series, <span class=\""sc-856aec89-1\" dvidax=\"\">Lucas Lynggaard T\u00f8nnesen, shared a heartwarming snapshot of the <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/1899-netflix-cast\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">1899 cast<\/a> and acknowledged the sad news, saying: \u201cWe are all truly devastated by this fact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\""twitter-tweet"\" data-dnt=\""true"\"><p lang=\""en"\" dir=\""ltr"\">As a lot of you may already know\u2026 1899 will not be renewed for a 2nd and 3rd season\u2026 We are all truly devastated by this fact.
