Lost Doctor Who<\/a> episodes from the 1960s will be brought back to life as brand new animations, according to a new report from The Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n Earlier in 2022,\u00a0it was reported<\/a> that a loss in funding would mean that no further animated Doctor Who projects would be commissioned\u00a0\u2013 though\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/a> understood that future productions could go ahead if BBC Studios secured another partner.<\/p>\n The two stories that will be getting the animation treatment are William Hartnell\u2019s penultimate story The Smugglers<\/a>, and Patrick Troughton\u2019s third adventure, The Underwater Menace<\/a>. Both four-part stories were originally transmitted by the\u00a0BBC\u00a0before film prints were sold overseas and the original tapes were destroyed.<\/p>\n RadioTimes.com<\/strong> has contacted BBC and BBC Studios for comment.<\/p>\n Episodes 2 and 3 of The Underwater Menace have been recovered, but only brief clips from The Smugglers story exist.<\/p>\n Speaking at a BFI Southbank screening last year for what was understood to be the final release of the Doctor Who animations, with a version of 1967 story The Abominable Snowmen<\/a>, the project\u2019s co-director Gary Russell said it was \u201ca shame\u201d that no further reconstructions were planned.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cFrom Big Finish\u2019s point of view, this is it for us \u2013 I\u2019m just very glad that we went out on one of the best Doctor Who stories of all time and we got the chance to animate that.\u201d<\/p> So, it looks like the new year is already off to a great start with news of more animations coming to screens soon \u2013 and it\u2019s just one part of the 60th anniversary celebrations in store for the beloved sci-fi series \u2013 The Mirror also claims that surviving black-and-white episodes of Doctor Who will be restored and colourised, for broadcast in 2023.<\/p>\n Whovians were recently treated to a sneak peek of the anticipated anniversary episodes in a new teaser, which gave us all another look at David Tennant<\/a>\u2018s highly-anticipated return, as well as Catherine Tate\u2019s Donna Noble.<\/p>\n Neil Patrick Harris<\/a> also featured in an enigmatic way, as well as Heartstopper\u2019s Yasmin Finney as Rose<\/a>, which prompted a slew of new questions about the format and plot of the upcoming special.<\/p>\n While the release date for the new animated specials is set to be revealed, it\u2019s understood that they will be released in keeping with the anniversary.
