{"id":28872,"date":"2023-01-20T08:00:43","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T07:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1770353"},"modified":"2023-01-20T11:02:25","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T10:02:25","slug":"babylon-star-jean-smart-reveals-real-figure-who-inspired-her-character","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/babylon-star-jean-smart-reveals-real-figure-who-inspired-her-character\/","title":{"rendered":"Babylon star Jean Smart reveals real figure who inspired her character"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 20 January 2023 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Damien Chazelle\u2019s 1920s-set epic <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/babylon-box-office-flop-comment\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Babylon<\/a> might not strictly be based on true events \u2013 but the writer\/director very much leant on real history when crafting his latest film.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the fictional characters who appear throughout the three-hour runtime are loosely based on prominent figures from Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age, and that includes Jean Smart\u2019s gossip columnist Elinor St John, whom Chazelle says is \u201cmodelled on a variety of writers and columnists\u201d.<\/p> <p>Speaking exclusively to <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> ahead of the film\u2019s UK release, Smart explained how there was one person in particular who she researched while she was preparing for the role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one girl, Elinor Glyn, who was a British screenwriter who came to Hollywood in the \u201920s,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd she also was a novelist \u2013 she is credited with coming up with the phrase It Girl and sort of helping Clara Bow become a star, and she even wrote one of the screenplays that Clara Bow did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smart continued: \u201cShe also wrote a novel called Three Weeks, which was considered sort of the \u201920s version of 50 Shades of Grey. So she was also a rather unconventional person, but was attracted to what was going on out here and moved to Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think for all of her seeming to be kind of an objective observer, you see towards the end that she\u2019s also caught up in the magic of filmmaking and how it makes people literally immortal.\u201d<\/p> <div class=\"&quot;brightcove\" embed=\"\"> <div class=\"&quot;embed__intrinsic&quot;\"> <div class=\"&quot;brightcove__player\" vjs-playlist-player-container=\"\"> <video data-video-id=\"6317596160112\" data-account=\"69912529001\" data-player=\"ByeOf0VZEl\" data-embed=\"&quot;default&quot;\" data-application-id=\"\" controls=\"\" class=\"&quot;video-js&quot;\"> <\/video> <\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<script src=\"&quot;\/\/players.brightcove.net\/69912529001\/ByeOf0VZEl_default\/index.min.js&quot;\"\/> <p>Babylon portrays a world that was characterised by outrageous excess, and Smart said that her immediate reaction on reading Chazelle\u2019s script was to ask if the period was \u201creally that insane\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what we see is based on reality, but when you put it all together in a film it\u2019s overwhelming,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo I mean, it\u2019s not as if those parties were your average day in Hollywood and things like that, but I just think the sort of freewheeling, no holds barred feeling is exactly what fuelled the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it is what attracted certain kinds of people. This idea, this new technology of making movies attracted people who were probably kind of outside the system, outside the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Babylon is now showing in UK cinemas.
