Nurse Crane\u2019s (Linda Bassett) role at Nonnatus House was under serious threat<\/a> in tonight\u2019s (Sunday 22nd January)\u00a0episode of Call the Midwife<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After a spiky encounter with a doctor who also sits on the board of health, she received a letter summoning her to appear before a panel on the grounds that she\u2019s working past retirement age.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve broken no laws,\u201d says Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen), attempting to ease her fears. \u201cYou have no need to explain yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Nurse Crane was already envisaging the worst.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do though,\u201d she replies. \u201cWhat if they tell me I\u2019ve got to give up working? Who would I be without this uniform?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, Nurse Crane won\u2019t be hanging up her tunic anytime soon. Instead, she\u2019s been instructed to attend a number of refresher courses to ensure that she\u2019s up to date with the latest developments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a good midwife, but that doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t be a better one,\u201d she said. She went on to talk about how Nonnatus House \u201cdoes things differently\u201d, but a member of the board swiftly cut her off before she could say her piece.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you do,\u201d he responded, visibly unimpressed. \u201cAnd it\u2019s gone on far too long. Nonnatus House and its eccentricities we will return to in due course. I will be speaking to Sister Julienne.\u201d<\/p>

A short time later, Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) communicated her concerns to Nurse Crane, Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) and Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt). \u201cI have to be completely candid with you,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been worried about the council\u2019s attitude to Nonnatus House for some time. But things have taken a marked turn for the worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The board has yet to specify what grand plans it has in store, but the midwives should expect the news \u201csoon enough\u201d.<\/p>\n

Just when you thought they were out of the woods, the future looks more uncertain than ever.<\/p>
