The creative team behind the hit series have insisted that there are no plans for a future revival and it\u2019s a fact that fans just have to reckon with. After all, you can have too much of a good thing.<\/p>\n
With a third season that has so far\u00a0left viewers reeling<\/a> and avidly piecing together their own fan theories<\/a>, we can anticipate an ending that will not only be dramatic, but also \u201ccathartic\u201d, according to series creator Sally Wainwright.<\/p>\n But why exactly won\u2019t there be any more of the beloved series? Read on to find out.<\/p> Creator Sally Wainwright and lead actor Sarah Lancashire have discussed the ending of Happy Valley at length, and agreed that the drama \u201cwould only return once more\u201d seven years after the second season aired.<\/p>\n At a BFI screening to mark the premiere of season 3 last December, executive producer Will Johnston explained<\/a> their collective thinking going into the third season. He said: \u201cThe two vital things are that Rhys [Connah, playing Ryan Cawood] is now at an age to make his own decisions about his life and the relationships in it, and [Lancashire\u2019s character] Catherine\u2019s on the brink of retirement, and those felt like such juicy things to explore.\u201d<\/p>\n He also hinted that Happy Valley would deliver a definitive ending, saying:\u00a0\u201cIt definitely isn\u2019t coming back \u2013 and again this is [from] Sally and Sarah who completely and rightly feel that you can have too much of a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re really not doing any more. You\u2019re a few weeks away from the ending but when you get to it, I really hope you\u2019ll feel content that if that\u2019s the last you ever see of the characters of Happy Valley, it was a big way to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n Although the series has been perfectly engineered by the creative team behind it,\u00a0Johnston also revealed that Lancashire \u2013 who also serves as an executive producer on the new season \u2013 had \u201ca very big voice\u201d in deciding how her character\u2019s story would conclude.<\/p>\n \u201cA series like this returning, the actors are in conversation very early about their characters and the way that things move forward. It\u2019s to be worked out together and Sally, as singular as she is as a writer and a director, is also a massive collaborator.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As for Wainwright herself, she echoed the same sentiment while speaking to Radio Times magazine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and stated that they\u00a0made a \u201cdefinite decision that this was going to be the final season\u201d.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cJust because it\u2019s been successful, we weren\u2019t going to let it drift on until it became a pale shadow of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n But it doesn\u2019t mean that there isn\u2019t an explosive finale to look forward to. Wainwright spoke of the final episode of season 3 and said:\u00a0\u201cA narrative has gone across all three: in season 1, Catherine and Tommy came face to face outside Ryan\u2019s school, and in season 2 they almost came face to face in the crematorium, at Tommy\u2019s mum\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n \u201cIn season 3, there\u2019s a very big face-to-face showdown<\/a>. The kind of cathartic showdown that people have waited for. It\u2019s pretty dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n Similarly, before the final season aired, James Norton (who plays Tommy Lee Royce<\/a>) said:\u00a0\u201cI think the reason this series is particularly exciting is because everyone knows it\u2019s the last and so everyone is going to be waiting for something to happen, and everyone is sort of predicting and guessing how Sally wants to end it.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cI have been predicting for the last seven years how she is going to end it so it was really wonderful to read the script and hear her ideas \u2013 and they don\u2019t disappoint.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that the new season is \u201cas big and bold as ever\u201d and is a project he is \u201cimmensely proud\u201d of. In his Big RT<\/a>, though, he mentions the \u201cpressure of expectation\u201d, saying that the series \u201chit the bull\u2019s-eye in the first and second season\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re all aware of the incredible love people have for it and we really have to deliver.
