Chris Chibnall is leaving with Jodie Whittaker, but who could be next to get hold of the TARDIS keys? <\/p>
Change is coming to Doctor Who<\/a>, with Jodie Whittaker\u2019s confirmed departure sparking a wave of debate about who could succeed her as the time-travelling, face-changing Doctor.<\/p>\n But an even bigger change is coming behind-the-scenes, with showrunner Chris Chibnall also on the way out and no-one yet announced to be taking over as head writer, producer and all round Who boss.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor \u2013 so I\u2019m not going to!\u201d Chibnall said in a press release, notably implying that the next showrunner has yet to be chosen.<\/p>\n \u201cI wish our successors \u2013 whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose \u2013 as much fun as we\u2019ve had. They\u2019re in for a treat!\u201d<\/p>\n\n The BBC added: \u201cWe will announce plans for the new generation of Doctor Who<\/a> in due course \u2013 watch this space!\u201d<\/p>\n So who could be the next Doctor Who showrunner? In this week\u2019s RadioTimes.com Doctor Who podcast<\/strong> we wade into the issue, debating the respective merits and likelihood of various candidates for the top job.<\/p>\n Could old hands like Mark Gatiss, Toby Whithouse, Sarah Dollard or Peter Harness finally get to take the reins themselves? Will talented newcomers like Pete McTighe or Vinay Patel get their shot at the crown? Or will the BBC look elsewhere to the likes of Jack Thorne, Sally Wainwright and Joe Barton \u2013 or dismantle the showrunner model as we know it altogether?<\/p>\n The only person to officially rule themselves out so far is author, screenwriter and producer Neil Gaiman, so there\u2019s everything to play for\u2026<\/p> Want more Doctor Who chat?
