In a recent interview with The New Yorker<\/a>, showrunner and creator Jesse Armstrong revealed he had decided to wrap things up with season 4<\/a>, which premieres next month.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a promise in the title of\u00a0Succession,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind.<\/p>\n \u201cFrom season 2, I\u2019ve been trying to think: is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?\u201d<\/p>\n Armstrong said he sat down with the other writers at the start of the creative process for season 4 and played out a number of different potential scenarios: \u201cWe could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks.<\/p>\n \u201cOr we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n But is it really the end for the stories of the Roys and those around them, sucked into the whirlwind of their familial drama and battles for succession, love, respect or all of the above?<\/p>\n \u201cThe feeling there could be something else in an allied world, or allied characters, or some of the same characters \u2013 that\u2019s also strong in me,\u201d Armstrong told the publication, hinting at the possibility of spin-offs in the future. \u201cMaybe there\u2019s another part of this world we could come back to, if there was an appetite?\u201d<\/p>\n While Succession\u2019s creator might think that\u2019s a possibility, however, it sounds like HBO chief Casey Bloys disagrees.<\/p>\n According to Variety<\/a>, Bloys isn\u2019t considering a Succession spin-off once the show takes its final bow.<\/p> \u201cI don\u2019t think so,\u201d he of the idea, though he wouldn\u2019t rule it out point blank. \u201cI always say \u2018never say never.\u2019 When we started talking about doing a [Game of] Thrones prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done. I had some people internally saying, \u2018This is crazy. What are you doing?\u2019 That said, I think that there\u2019s something about the universe that George [RR Martin] created that lent itself to [spin-offs]. There\u2019s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles.<\/p>\n \u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem to me that there\u2019s something in Succession where you would go, \u2018Let\u2019s follow just this kid\u2019 or whatever. It doesn\u2019t seem like a natural thing to me. But if [creator Jesse Armstrong] said, \u2018I want to do this,\u2019 then I would follow Jesse\u2019s lead.\u201d<\/p>\n Succession season 4 is coming to Sky and NOW on Monday 27th March 2023.
