It\u2019s a role that Redgrave has played since 2012, but in this new Torchwood-style series based on UNIT \u2014 the Unified Intelligence Taskforce \u2014 she will reportedly be taking the lead.<\/p>\n
The fictional military organisation has appeared in Doctor Who, Torchwood<\/a> and The Sarah Jane Adventures but could very well be getting a proper offshoot of its own.<\/p>\n The organisation was first introduced in the long-running sci-fi show back in 1968 and its purpose is to investigate and combat paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to Earth. When approached by RadioTimes.com<\/a> for confirmation, the BBC declined to comment on the rumours.<\/p>\n Redgrave, who stars as the UNIT boss and daughter of classic series character Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, will also be returning in Ncuti Gatwa\u2019s first season<\/a> along with Aneurin Barnard<\/a>\u2018s new character.<\/p>\n The rumours come after Torchwood writer Phil Ford called for a comeback<\/a> of the Doctor Who spin-off under Russell T Davies\u2019s second reign.<\/p>\n Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/strong>\u00a0ahead of the release of\u00a0his new Target book<\/a>\u00a0based on his 2009 episode The Waters of Mars<\/a>, Ford said: \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to see more done with UNIT. I\u2019ve always thought there\u2019s stuff we could do with UNIT there.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n He continued: \u201cAnd, of course, I think there\u2019s every case for bringing back a version of Torchwood. But the thing about Doctor Who is the universe is so huge over all these years. Over 60 years, there\u2019s so many places you could go to to develop spin-offs. But I honestly have no idea what is going on in the great man\u2019s mind so we\u2019ll have to wait and find out.\u201d<\/p>\n When previously asked if he think Torchwood could make a return to our screens, Ford added: \u201cI think there\u2019s every chance. Even if it was going back in time to an earlier iteration of Torchwood, which in fact we did do in the show. But absolutely, I don\u2019t see why we couldn\u2019t do that. It\u2019s science fiction, it\u2019s Doctor Who, you could do all sorts of things \u2014 as I\u2019m sure will happen!\u201d<\/p> \u00a0<\/p>\n Well, if the news is true then this \u201cnew stage\u201d of Doctor Who continues to look brighter than ever, as Davies previously teased. On the new distribution deal with Disney Plus<\/a>, he said: \u201cI thought \u2013 with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC\u2019s measures \u2013 it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cThose spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce.
