{"id":31206,"date":"2023-03-16T16:03:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T15:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1801901"},"modified":"2023-03-17T02:04:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T01:04:32","slug":"rye-lane-director-reveals-how-insane-a-list-cameo-came-about","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/rye-lane-director-reveals-how-insane-a-list-cameo-came-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Rye Lane director reveals how \u201cinsane\u201d A-list cameo came about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Raine Allen-Miller speaks exclusively to RadioTimes.com about the surprise appearance in her brand new film. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 16 March 2023 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for Rye Lane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South London-set romcom Rye Lane received rave reviews after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year \u2013 and now it arrives in UK cinemas this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The film follows recently single 20-somethings Yas and Dom as they spend a day together following an unorthodox meet-cute in a gallery toilet, with Vivian Oparah and <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/industry-season-3-writer-exclusive-newsupdate\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Industry<\/a>\u2018s David Jonsson starring in the lead roles.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout an extremely eventful day, the pair discuss their bad breakups and happen across all manner of strange sights and larger-than-life characters \u2013 including a very brief run-in with a Hollywood A-lister and modern icon of British cinema.<\/p> <p>The A-lister in question is none other than Colin Firth, who appears as a food server at a Mexican food stall appropriately called Love Guac\u2019tually \u2013 and speaking exclusively to <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>, director Raine Allen-Miller explained just how the cameo appearance came about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got a funny story about Love Guac\u2019tually,\u201d she said. \u201cI decided I really want to do this thing where we have a shop that\u2019s called like, About a Burrito or something. I said it to my partner, and I was like, it has to have somebody like You Know Who in there. And my partner just suddenly came out and went, \u2018What about Love Guac\u2019tually?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh my god.\u2019 And it was like the best thing ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI always wanted to do like a cheeky wink to those other films that are set in London and are romantic, but they are definitely nothing like this film. I kind of felt like, it\u2019s gonna be compared\u2026 like people are going to ask me questions about it. I just thought it was, you know, he\u2019s absolutely incredible. And he was so humble, so kind and giving and it was like just a dream. And he gave us the best bits of advice for our career \u2013 like a real career \u2013 and hopefully we use them!\u201d<\/p> <div class=\"&quot;brightcove\" embed=\"\"> <div class=\"&quot;embed__intrinsic&quot;\"> <div class=\"&quot;brightcove__player\" vjs-playlist-player-container=\"\"> <video data-video-id=\"6322669629112\" data-account=\"69912529001\" data-player=\"ByeOf0VZEl\" data-embed=\"&quot;default&quot;\" data-application-id=\"\" controls=\"\" class=\"&quot;video-js&quot;\"> <\/video> <\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<script src=\"&quot;\/\/players.brightcove.net\/69912529001\/ByeOf0VZEl_default\/index.min.js&quot;\"\/> <p class=\"&quot;x_MsoNormal&quot;\">Despite that nod \u2013 or \u201cfriendly middle finger\u201d, as she put it \u2013 to classic British romcoms, Allen-Miller doesn\u2019t think her film fits quite so snugly in the genre, instead standing very much as its own thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was sent the script, I never even read it as\u2026. nobody said, \u2018Hey, this is a romcom!\u2019 I just read it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it was funny, and it just so happened to have some romance there, you know \u2013 but the romcom genre has become this thing, when actually for me it\u2019s just a funny film with some romance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what I did enjoy was that everyone was calling it a romcom, and I hated that,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I think that energy, you know\u2026\u00a0 often if I really don\u2019t like something, I sort of go into it with optimism, like, \u2018I\u2019m going to do something that isn\u2019t this with a smile.\u2019 So for me, it was like, \u2018Okay, maybe it\u2019s a romcom, but this is going to be my version of a romcom!'\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rye Lane is in UK cinemas from Friday 17th March 2023.
