Ted Lasso\u2019s third episode begins with Welsh AFC Richmond player Colin Hughes (Billy Harris) waking up and getting ready for the day. As he goes downstairs to the kitchen, we learn that\u2019s he not alone.<\/p>\n
A man (played by newcomer Sam Liu) offers him coffee and as Colin leaves, he asks, \u201cSex when you get back from Dubai?\u201d and the pair kiss. As Colin drives away, he reassures himself in the car: \u201cI am a strong and capable man.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later in the episode, Colin introduces his love interest as a friend to the rest of the AFC Richmond team at Sam Obisanya\u2019s (Toheeb Jimoh) restaurant by saying, \u201cThis is my pal Michael \u2013 world\u2019s greatest wingman.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of the episode, journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance), who\u2019s writing a book about the team\u2019s journey, sees Colin and Michael kissing in an alley, leaving us wondering what he\u2019ll do with this information, as Colin isn\u2019t openly out.<\/p>\n
Brendan Hunt, who co-created Ted Lasso<\/a> and plays Coach Beard, spoke to RadioTimes.com<\/a> exclusively about the storyline. \u201cWe\u2019ve known for a while that Colin was gay,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just a matter of when we were going to finally get to that. It\u2019s still a taboo in football, but there are more active players who are coming out.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was Josh Cavallo in Australia last year, Jakub Jankto in Czech Republic this year, and Jake Daniels at Blackpool. It\u2019s just part of what\u2019s happening in football. We may be a fake football club, but we\u2019re trying to show a little bit of football reality here.\u201d<\/p>\n Was that something that was always on the cards for the series? \u201cWe knew we would have a gay player on the team,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cBefore season 2, it was like, \u2018OK, well, should we cast that someone?\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cAnd then we thought, \u2018Oh no, actually, it\u2019ll be better if that person\u2019s already on the team and we\u2019re not acknowledging it and they\u2019re hiding it so well, but there\u2019s been no hint of it so far.\u2019 That helps demonstrate what this person is going through.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cWhen people go back and watch the show now after this revelation, they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Wow, he was hiding that for so long.
