ITV\u2019s The Hunt for Raoul Moat explores the deadly, far-reaching impact of rage.\u00a0In the early hours of July 3rd 2010, trainee hairdresser Samantha Stobbart was shot twice in the stomach by her ex-boyfriend Raoul Moat through a window at a property in Birtley, Gateshead. Her boyfriend at the time, karate instructor Chris Brown, was also shot outside the property.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Stobbart, who was 22, survived the attack, but only just.<\/p>\n \u201cRaoul just fired and left me fighting for my life on the floor,\u201d she told the News of the World (via BBC News<\/a>). \u201c<\/span>Somehow my arm ended up in front of me as a block, and the doctors have turned around to me and said if my arm wasn\u2019t there, then I would have died\u2026 it took all the pressure and force from hitting my organs, really.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n But Brown, who was 29, died of his injuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 37-year-old Moat, a former nightclub bouncer, had been released from Durham prison just days before the attack. He was serving time for assaulting a family member. He was also a bodybuilder and reportedly had a steroid addiction, which is said could have intensified his explosive temper.<\/p>\n While Moat was behind bars, Stobbart contacted him to let him know that their relationship was over, which he refused to accept. It was during that period that she began dating Brown and she also told Moat that he was a police officer in the hope that it was ward him off. But Moat hated the police, which only galvanised him further.<\/p>\n After the initial shooting, Moat fled the scene, prompting a police manhunt. In the early hours of the following morning, he shot and blinded police officer David Rathband while he was sat in his patrol vehicle at a roundabout. Rathband later took his own life in 2012, unable to cope with his injuries.<\/p>\n On 10th July 2010, following a stand-off with armed officers lasting more than six hours, Moat shot and killed himself in the village of Rothbury, Northumberland.<\/p>\n Stobbart met Moat in 2004 when she was just 16. He was 15 years older than her. In an interview with ITV News<\/a>, Stobbart\u2019s half-sister Kelly said their relationship, which was on and off for six years, was mired in domestic violence, with Stobbart leaving him on a number of occasions.<\/p>\n In court, Stobbart said (via The Guardian<\/a>) that Moat had a \u201cJekyll and Hyde split personality\u201d and she\u2019d previously told police investigators that she was<\/span> \u201cvery worried, frightened, really scared\u201d about what he\u2019d do when he was released from prison.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI expected he would flip his lid and that there would be trouble; he\u2019d come looking for Chris,\u201d she said. <\/span>\u201cI had told him the relationship was at an end but he would not have it. He would not take no for an answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n But Stobbart didn\u2019t believe he was capable of doing what he did.<\/p>\n In another interview (via The Guardian<\/a>), her sister Kelly discussed his \u201cunpredictable\u201d outbursts, adding: <\/span>\u201cHe loves the fact that he thinks people are scared of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n On one occasion, Moat threatened to attack Kelly\u2019s brother, and he also turned up at Stobbart\u2019s grandmother\u2019s house with a gun because he believed she was with another man. His neighbours referred to him as <\/span>\u201cbully boy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Sally Messham, who portrays Samantha in the series, said: \u201cHe was both physically and mentally abusive towards her. Moat\u2019s emotional manipulation and later taunting is just beyond belief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Stobbart and Moat\u2019s three-year-old daughter Chanel was inside the house during his attack.<\/p>\n In an interview with The People<\/a> in 2013, Stobbart said that she had considered taking her own life, but decided not to because of her child.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t imagine how horrible it must be to lose your sight,\u201d she said of David Rathband. \u201c<\/span>But I do have an inkling of how he must have felt. I know how low I have felt and there were lots of times when I thought about suicide. <\/span>I just thought, \u2018I can\u2019t do this any more.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut then I\u2019ve got my little girl, and I would look at her and remember why I had to live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n She added: \u201cIf I had lost my eyesight and couldn\u2019t see her, I don\u2019t think I\u2019d be here either.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Stobbart also revealed that she would sleep with a light on due to flashbacks and a fear of being attacked by Moat\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n \u201cAll I have to do is shut my eyes and I\u2019m there,\u201d she said. \u201cChris is lying on the grass, dead. And Raoul is outside. <\/span>He has a dead look on his eyes, like the lights are on but no one is there. <\/span>That picture of him that night will stay with me forever. I have flashbacks all the time, and they wake me up in the middle of the night.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut that isn\u2019t the only reason I\u2019m scared of the dark. There are hundreds of people out there who blame me. <\/span>That\u2019s why we have moved three times in two years, why I\u2019m now living with my parents, and why I\u2019m always looking over my shoulder. I think I\u2019ll be doing that for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Sam\u2019s half-sister Kelly recently criticised the ITV drama in an interview with the Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re lucky our Sam survived,\u201d she said. \u201cITV don\u2019t realise the impact this will have on the people involved. <\/span>It still gives me nightmares and I suffer PTSD. <\/span>I\u2019m so sick of hearing Raoul\u2019s name, and I\u2019m so sick of him being on TV.<\/span><\/p> \u201cI was only made aware of this latest drama when I was tagged in a post the Evening Chronicle shared about it. My whole family and I all feel that it should be left in the past. So many people blame her for what happened on social media and troll her. This is something we can never forget but we would like to move on from it.\u201d<\/p>\n Commenting on the series,\u00a0executive producer Jake Lushington of World Productions, said the aim is to \u201cshine a light on a major piece of British history \u2013 the biggest manhunt there ever was \u2013 and to try and refocus people on what actually happened\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cNobody could ever say that the way we put this show together was focused towards, in broad terms, entertainment.
