The series, which returns to Channel 5 next week, unravels cases across 1970s England, based on the mystery novels by late author PD James \u2013 with season 2 adapting Death of an Expert Witness, A Certain Justice and The Murder Room.<\/p>\n
Ahead of the premiere, Carvel spoke to RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press, explaining that a key focus of the episodes is on Dalgliesh potentially passing the torch to a new generation of detectives.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s another big journey in the series,\u201d he began, \u201cwhich is because, on the one hand, he\u2019s maybe stepping back. There\u2019s a potential ending where he gives it all up.\u201d<\/p> Carvel continued: \u201cSo part of what\u2019s going on as well is that he\u2019s bringing others on\u2026 he sees potential in Kate Miski and he\u2019s got this new guy on the team.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so there\u2019s also an element of stepping back and watching how other people do things, and trying to bring them on and bring them forward and give away his power. So that\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n But just because Dalgliesh is questioning his future, don\u2019t expect him to pursue answers any less aggressively, with Carvel saying that he can\u2019t \u201chelp the bloodhound in him\u201d or getting \u201crighteous about pursuit of the truth\u201d.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s not just a big career choice that is causing Dalgliesh to reflect, as the nature of his latest cases will affect him profoundly as an \u201cemotionally porous\u201d individual.<\/p>\n Carvel added: \u201cHe\u2019s kind of going back into his past, to the county of his birth. And in doing that he\u2019s also travelling back in time himself and thinking about where he came from and these bigger questions. But that\u2019s happening very quietly.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd what should he find there?
