Roberts previously told <a href=\"\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/movies-tv\/a35129140\/outlander-season-6-filming-production-start\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social-media&amp;utm_campaign=socialflowTWELM&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\">ELLE Magazine<\/a>, explaining that the cast and crew had worked hard to \u201ckeep Outlander, Outlander\u201d while still sticking to safety guidelines, and that the series would rely more on visual effects this season.<\/p>\n<p>Fans will get their first look at a shortened season six next year in 2022, following a delayed filming schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser\u2019s Ridge,\u201d said showrunner Matthew B. Roberts in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>While that might seem a while away, beyond this latest #Droughtlander there\u2019s plenty for fans to look forward to, as the time-travelling series has been renewed for an \u201cextended\u201d season seven \u2013\u00a0with hopes for more seasons along the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as people keep wanting to watch us, then we\u2019ll keep making [Outlander seasons],\u201d Sam Heughan exclusively told\u00a0<strong>Radio Times<\/strong>\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>After all, there are plenty more <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/outlander-book-order\/&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener\">Outlander books<\/a> to adapt in the Diana Gabaldon series, so the actor\u2019s comments certainly bode well for the show\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-part seventh season will reportedly see the return of main cast members \u2013 Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin \u2013\u00a0who will also star in the upcoming sixth instalment (via <a href=\"\/\/tvline.com\/2021\/03\/14\/outlander-renewed-season-7-starz\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\">TV Line<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so excited Starz has given us the opportunity to continue the epic <span class=\"&quot;markzzrascen3&quot;\" data-markjs=\"&quot;true&quot;\" data-ogac=\"&quot;&quot;\" data-ogab=\"&quot;&quot;\" data-ogsc=\"&quot;&quot;\" data-ogsb=\"&quot;&quot;\">Outlander\u00a0<\/span>journey,\u201d showrunner Matt Roberts said in a March 2021 statement. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait to get into the writers\u2019 room and start breaking [Diana Gabaldon\u2019s novel] Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about season six, Heughan said: \u201cWe\u2019re still in America, we\u2019re in Fraser\u2019s Ridge and there are some new characters who are friends and there are new foes, too\u2026 But we\u2019re also building up to the War of Independence \u2013 nothing is ever easy in Outlander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Heughan and co-star Caitriona Balfe had spoken to Starz about what storylines they were looking forward to, claiming they are looking forward to seeing how the Frasers \u201cheal together\u201d after the shocking moments in the season five finale.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a <a href=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=554&amp;v=SJCIIjuYqYk&amp;feature=emb_title&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\">Starz<\/a> interview in September 2020, Caitriona Balfe said that Claire\u2019s healing process was \u201cone of the things I\u2019m most looking forward to, seeing how she copes with all that\u2026 how the family as a whole unit heal together or help her to heal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The upcoming series will be based on the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon\u2019s Outlander series \u2013 A Breath of Snow and Ashes. We\u2019ll keep this page updated with further news.<\/p>\n<p>Outlander was officially in production as of February 2021, following lengthy delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. We\u2019ve had fittings, we\u2019ve got scripts, we are getting there. It\u2019s just such an epic show it\u2019s taking a while to get there, but we will be back for season six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans may have to ride out the rest of the Droughtlander\u2026 but in the meantime, US viewers can watch previous seasons on Starz, and UK viewers on <a href=\"\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Outlander-Season-01\/dp\/B07M5KFMBY?tag=radtim0b-21&amp;ascsubtag=radiotimes-0&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;nofollow&quot; noopener noreferrer\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\">Amazon Prime<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Season six got back in production in Scotland following a long delay due to lockdown restrictions, and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts reassured fans that the show\u2019s famously intimate scenes won\u2019t be going anywhere, despite some necessary safety adjustments during filming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want me or the staff changing what the story is for COVID. We have a lot of intimate scenes\u2014that\u2019s where we live and breathe.\u201d \u00a0Speaking to <a href=\"\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/movies-tv\/a35129140\/outlander-season-6-filming-production-start\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social-media&amp;utm_campaign=socialflowTWELM&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\">ELLE Magazine<\/a>, he revealed that the solution came down to \u201ctesting, testing, testing,\u201d adding:\u00a0\u201cWe had to figure out how to make sure we tested everybody a million times before they walked onto set and keep that bubble as safe as possible. That was our main focus\u2014making sure everybody feels safe walking onto a set in the studios and locations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite safety being paramount, Roberts insists he wouldn\u2019t sacrifice the tone of the show: \u201cI don\u2019t know how to write \u201cCOVID-friendly scenes,\u201d certainly not an Outlander scene, because we are going to have people next to each other, being emotional\u2014you talk close to people, and that\u2019s where it transfers COVID. However, we won\u2019t see Duncan Lacroix return as Jamie\u2019s godfather Murtagh as the character died in season five.<\/p>\n<p>There are new faces on the way though as Mark Lewis Jones, Alexander Vlahos &amp; Jessica Reynolds have all signed up to appear in the sixth season. The three will be playing the roles of Tom Christie, Allan Christie and Malva Christie.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Christie is the de facto leader of a group of Protestant settlers while his children are Allan and Malva. Expect Malva, in particular, to have an interesting relationship with her father as she gets closer to Claire and her outlook on the world.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the behind-the-scenes crew, we already know that one vital member of the production team won\u2019t be returning for season six. Roberts, Outlander showrunner, said, \u201cFilming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible. Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been no details released about when season seven might start production; nor do we know whether season seven will be filmed back-to-back with season six.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll keep this page updated with any season seven news.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Outlander season 5 ending explained<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>*Warning: spoilers ahead for Outlander season five episode 12*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Season five was as action-packed and nail-biting as ever, with near-death experiences for both Roger (by hanging) and Jamie (snake-bite); a desperately sad farewell to Murtagh; and Brianna dealing out justice to her rapist Stephen Bonnet, whom she shot out of mercy knowing that drowning (his death sentence) was his greatest fear.<\/p>\n<p>Roger, Brianna and Jemmy also failed to return to the future through the stones, landing back where they started in 18th century America \u2013 before realising that \u2018home\u2019 meant their family around them at Fraser\u2019s Ridge.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, the most dramatic and also controversial storyline was reserved for the end of the season, which saw Claire brutally gang-raped by Brownsville resident Lionel Brown and his men.<\/p>\n<p>Lionel \u2013 a previous patient of Claire\u2019s \u2013 attacked Fraser\u2019s Ridge and kidnapped Claire, before confronting her about her medical pseudonym,\u00a0Dr Rawlings, and blaming her for his wife rejecting his sexual advances.<\/p>\n<p>During the rape, Claire went into a dissociative dream-scape, imagining her family as they would be if they lived in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/10\/arts\/television\/outlander-finale-caitriona-balfe-diana-gabaldon.html&quot;\">The New York Times<\/a>, Balfe explained how the creative team \u201chad so many conversations about how to empower Claire\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;css-1fanzo5\">\n<div class=\"&quot;css-53u6y8&quot;\">\n<p class=\"&quot;css-exrw3m\">\u201cI felt that if we were going to do the dream-escapes, we had to keep in mind why,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;css-exrw3m\">\u201cThey\u2019re not a gimmick, not a reason to wear cool costumes. Claire is experiencing something terrible. This has to show the progression of her mental state, to show that she\u2019s reached a breaking point, that she\u2019s snapped in some way, and is trying to stay in one piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamie and his men discovered Claire tied to a tree, Lionel and his men asleep at their campsite \u2013 all were killed except Lionel, who was brought back to Fraser\u2019s Ridge for questioning.<\/p>\n<p>John Quincy Myers offered Claire revenge, but Jamie reminded her and John of her Hippocratic oath to \u201cdo no harm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, Marsali never took such an oath, which she later used to her advantage when she poisoned Lionel using Claire\u2019s newly-made syringe.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Outlander season 6 episodes: What will happen next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Fall-out from Lionel\u2019s death \u2013 and Claire\u2019s trauma<\/h3>\n<p>Jamie returned Lionel\u2019s body to his brother, who swore revenge on the Frasers \u2013 meaning that season six will likely deal with the fall-out from Lionel\u2019s murder, and Marsali\u2019s part in it.<\/p>\n<p>We will also likely see Claire continue to cope with her trauma from series five \u2013 and will likely be aided by bother her husband, Jamie, and daughter, Brianna, who are all also rape survivors.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, there\u2019s that teensy tiny issue of the looming American War of Independence, with further danger to be faced in North Carolina \u2013 and Jamie\u2019s own mortality is clearly weighing heavy on him.<\/p>\n<p>In the series five final episode, he ominously told Claire: \u201cWhen the day shall come that we do part, if my last words are not, \u2018I love you\u2019, you ken it\u2019s because I dina have time.\u201d[sic]<\/p>\n<p>In a fundraiser interview hosted by Starz in September 2020, both Balfe and Heughan mentioned the \u201crepercussions\u201d of Claire\u2019s rape in season five.<\/p>\n<p>You can listen to their conversation here from around nine minutes in.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Marsali and Fergus<\/h3>\n<div class=\"&quot;image-handler__container\" style=\"padding-bottom:\"> <img class=\"&quot;wp-image-711164\" align=\"\" data-src=\"&quot;https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/3\/2020\/02\/marsali-82a2282.gif?quality=90&amp;resize=620%2C413&quot;\" width=\"&quot;620&quot;\" height=\"&quot;413&quot;\" alt=\"&quot;Outlander&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Marsali\" \/><\/div>\n<p>In May, Lauren Lyle (who plays Marsali MacKimmie Fraser) teased plot details for her character next season. She told <a href=\"\/\/tvline.com\/2020\/05\/11\/outlander-season-5-finale-marsali-fergus-lauren-lyle-interview\/&quot;\">TV Line<\/a> that season six will see a chance for Marsali and Fergus (C\u00e9sar Domboy).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love the fact that they\u2019re one of the only couples that don\u2019t fight that much, and we don\u2019t argue that much.
