The Alan Partridge actor plays DCI Driscoll \u2013 the man who managed to secure convictions for two of Stephen Lawrence’s murderers. <\/p>

The real-life former DCI Clive Driscoll has revealed his thoughts on Steve Coogan\u2019s casting in the ITV drama Stephen<\/a>, in which Coogan plays Driscoll.<\/p>\n

The real DCI Driscoll managed to secure convictions for two of Stephen Lawrence\u2019s murderers almost 20 years after the teenager\u2019s murder during a racially motivated attack in 1993.<\/p>\n

The three-part drama is a sequel to ITV\u2019s landmark 1999 drama The Murder of Stephen Lawrence and begins in 2006 following a turning point in the case.<\/p>\n

On learning that Steve Coogan would portray him on-screen, Driscoll said, \u201cFor a nano second I had credibility with my own children because they love Steve Coogan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to him on Zoom for two-and-a-half hours. He was incredibly lovely and down to earth. We were going to meet up, but that was impossible due to the lockdown. He is a very talented man.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also revealed that he thanked the Alan Partridge actor for starring in the ITV drama, and for \u201ckeeping Stephen\u2019s story out there\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thanked him for actually taking the part, being part of the story and keeping Stephen\u2019s story out there. I still think we can all learn from Stephen\u2019s story and we should cherish his memory,\u201d he said.<\/p>

The drama \u201ctells the story of the ongoing struggle by Doreen and Neville Lawrence to achieve justice and how a detective, DCI Clive Driscoll \u2013 working closely with the Lawrences \u2013 puts together an investigation that finally \u2013 more than 18 years after his death \u2013 secures <\/span>the convictions of two of the gang who committed the murder of Stephen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve Coogan said it was an \u201chonour\u201d play Clive Driscoll in ITV\u2019s Stephen<\/a>. Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a><\/strong> and other press, Coogan said, \u201cIt was an honour to play Clive really, because as an actor I don\u2019t often play nice people.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cIt was a nice change for me to play someone who had integrity, simple unannounced integrity, if you like.\u201d<\/p>\n
