The question of who will be the next Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0showrunner is likely to prompt much speculation until an official announcement is made \u2013 but one thing we know for sure is that Chris Chibnall won\u2019t have a hand in the matter.<\/p>\n The current showrunner \u2013 who announced last month that he would be leaving the sci-fi juggernaut in 2022 \u2013 has explained that the decision as to his replacement is \u201cway above the pay grade of an incumbent showrunner.\u201d<\/p>\n Writing in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine<\/a>, Chibnall said: \u201cThe big change that happened during our tenure has been Doctor Who being produced through BBC Studios, rather than the BBC\u2019s in-house Drama Department.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a difference which won\u2019t really have affected how you view the show, but it affects the process by which the programme is made, managed and planned strategically.<\/p>\n \u201cThe appointment of a new showrunner is a commercially sensitive decision (way above the pay grade of an incumbent showrunner) so it\u2019ll be a joint decision between BBC Studios and the top decision-makers at the BBC.\u201d<\/p> Chibnall arrived as showrunner back in 2018 and has so far helmed two series, with another season and a trilogy of specials<\/a> to go before he hands over the reins to the next boss.<\/p>\n He revealed in late July that he would be stepping down, explaining, \u201cI can\u2019t imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor \u2013 so I\u2019m not going to!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wish our successors \u2013 whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose \u2013 as much fun as we\u2019ve had.
