Disney Plus won’t continue the series “for the sake of bringing it back”. <\/p>

Twenty-five years after it wowed critics and took the UK box office by storm, The Full Monty<\/a> has finally scored a sequel.<\/p>\n

An eight-part series reuniting the original cast \u2013 including Robert Carlyle as Gaz, Mark Addy as Dave and Lesley Sharp as Jean \u2013 is streaming now on Disney Plus<\/a>, picking up two decades after the Monty gang strutted their stuff on the stage of a Sheffield nightclub.<\/p>\n

But is this new follow-up \u2013 from the original film\u2019s writer Simon Beaufoy \u2013 intended as a one-off?<\/p>\n

\u201cNever say never,\u201d said Carlyle, when quizzed about the possibility of more Monty at a BFI screening of the new series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love these characters, I love this whole thing\u2026 this world. I feel at home in this world \u2013 I come<\/em> from that world. So yeah, I\u2019d welcome it.\u201d<\/p>

Echoing her co-star\u2019s comments, Sharp insisted that there\u2019s still \u201clots to say\u201d in the world of The Full Monty, though executive producer Lee Mason \u2013 director of scripted content (EMEA) at The Walt Disney Company \u2013 cautioned that a second season is not a sure thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t just about bringing something back for the sake of bringing it back \u2013 that\u2019s why it took 25 years between the film and the series,\u201d said Mason.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got to be about the scripts being right. It\u2019s also got to be about Simon feeling he\u2019s ready to tell the next chapter\u2026 and it\u2019s also about getting [the cast] together, because their schedules are insane. So there\u2019s a lot of things that have to play out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 1997 film followed the exploits of six unemployed men who put on a male striptease act to raise some cash.<\/p>\n

While the new Full Monty series eschews the stripping storyline of the original, it deals with many of the same topics that made the Sheffield-based film a standout success; themes like unemployment, fatherhood, mental health and more.<\/p>
