John Cleese: Cancel Me will see the comedian ask if it is possible to create comedy without causing offence. <\/p>
British comedy legend John Cleese will be exploring cancel culture in a new documentary series for Channel 4.<\/p>\n
The series \u2013 which is to be titled John Cleese: Cancel Me \u2013 will see the Monty Python and Fawlty Towers star \u201cexplore why a new \u2018woke\u2019 generation is trying to rewrite the rules on what can and can\u2019t be said\u201d.<\/p>\n
Throughout the series, the comedian will talk to a variety of people \u2013 including some famous faces who claim to have been \u2018cancelled\u2019 and others who have campaigned against comedians and programmes \u2013 to ask if it is possible to create comedy without causing offence.<\/p>
Speaking about the programme, Cleese said, \u201cI\u2019m delighted to have a chance to find out, on camera, about all the aspects of so-called Political Correctness.<\/p>\n
\u2018There\u2019s so much I really don\u2019t understand, like: how the impeccable idea of \u2018Let\u2019s all be kind to people\u2019 has been developed in some cases ad absurdum.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to bring the various reasonings right out in the open so that people can be clearer in their minds what they agree with, what they don\u2019t agree with, and what they still can\u2019t make their mind up about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cleese has often been an outspoken critic of so-called cancel culture in the past, regularly posting about the subject on social media.<\/p>\n
Last year, he criticised UKTV after they removed a line from an episode of Fawlty Towers which saw the Major using the N-word.<\/p>\n
Speaking to 60 Minutes Australia<\/a>, he explained, \u201cThey completely missed the point. It was a stupid decision in the first place. It was as though they thought that if you put certain words in people\u2019s mouths, that meant it had to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cComedy\u2019s not about perfect people. It\u2019s about all of our imperfections and it\u2019s not about things going right. It\u2019s all about things going wrong.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s this pathetic idea that people can\u2019t stand up for themselves and can\u2019t hear different opinions.
