James Mangold revealed why Ke Huy Quan didn’t return as Short Round. <\/p>
Harrison Ford is donning the fedora and the whip one last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/a>, out in UK cinemas today (Wednesday 28th June).<\/p>\n Ford\u2019s hands-on archaeologist is joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who plays brand new character Helen Shaw, and some familiar faces from the previous four entries to the franchise too.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, Ke Huy Quan\u2019s Short Round isn\u2019t among them.<\/p>\n The character first appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom<\/a>, when Quan was only 12 years old, but he left a long-lasting impression in fans.<\/p>\n With Quan recently earning an Oscar for his performance in smash hit genre-bender Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/a>, some fans had hoped he would reprise the role for Indy\u2019s swan song.<\/p>\n But, during an exclusive chat with RadioTimes.com<\/a>, director James Mangold revealed why it wasn\u2019t to be.<\/p> \u00a0<\/p>\n When asked whether he had considered revisiting the character, Mangold explained that it wasn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n \u201cI already had my two grown-ups in the movie, so I was kind of\u2026 it didn\u2019t occur to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Even if it had, however, it sounds like it would\u2019ve proved difficult, as Quan was filming at the time.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cCertainly Ke was, I think, shooting Everything Everywhere All at Once while we were making this movie, so I kind of hadn\u2019t anything to kind of call out to me and go, \u2018This is who you should bring back,’\u201d Mangold said.<\/p>\n He added that he was \u201cthrilled when I saw that movie and saw [Quan] finding a voice in movies again as a grown-up actor \u2013 and in one obviously that was so profoundly successful, and talked to so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n Additional reporting by Morgan Jeffery.<\/em><\/p>
