Wonka, a prequel to Roald Dahl\u2019s beloved 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is coming to the big screen later this year \u2013 and <\/span>now the first official trailer for the upcoming musical fantasy film has landed, giving fans a look at Hugh Grant<\/a> as <\/span>an Oompa-Loompa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The British actor appears towards the end of the newly-released footage, sporting the iconic green hair and orange face of the characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the clip, we see the titular character (Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>) come face to face with Grant\u2019s Oompa Loompa, who is trapped in a glass jar, and say: \u201c<\/span>So you\u2019re the funny little man who\u2019s been following me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Oompa Loompa replies: \u201cI will have you know that I am a perfectly respectful size for an Oompa Loompa,\u201d before adding<\/span> \u201callow me to refresh your memory\u201d and beginning to dance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the clip, we also see Wonka<\/span> joining forces with a young girl, played by Calah Lane, on his way to creating a chocolate that makes those who consume it fly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside Chalamet and Grant, the film\u2019s all-star cast includes Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins and Keegan-Michael Key, and will be packed <\/span>with musical and dance numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a conversation with <\/span>British Vogue<\/span><\/a>, Chalamet confirmed that he would be reprising seven musical numbers in <\/span>Wonka<\/span>, as well as revealing that Wonka isn\u2019t a dark origin story as many had speculated, but rather an uplifting and joyous film. \u201c<\/span>Seven! You know what\u2019s really funny about that is it\u2019s so misleading. This movie is so sincere, it\u2019s so joyous,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wonka is set to land in cinemas on 15th December 2023<\/strong>, after its original release date of March 17th 2023 was delayed.<\/span><\/p>\n

After that, the Warner Bros movie will likely end up on Max<\/a>, the platform formerly known as HBO Max.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wonka has been in the works with Warner Bros since late 2016 after the company <\/span>acquired the rights to the classic character from the Roald Dahl estate.<\/p>\n

Chalamet and Grant will be joined by an all-star cast which includes Olivia Colman (Heartstopper<\/a>), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Rake Thakrar (Sex Education<\/a>) and Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean).<\/span><\/p>\n

Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) is also set to appear in the film. She previously\u00a0<\/span>worked with <\/span>Wonka\u2019s <\/span>director and screenwriter on the <\/span>Paddington <\/span>movies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simon Farnaby (<\/span>Your Highness<\/span>), who is co-writing <\/span>Wonka<\/span>, has also joined the cast, alongside\u00a0<\/span>Mathew Baynton (<\/span>Ghosts<\/span>), <\/span>Jim Carter (<\/span>Best Picture winner <\/span>Shakespeare in Love<\/span>), Tom Davis (<\/span>Paddington 2<\/span>),\u00a0<\/span>comedian Matt Lucas (<\/span>Alice in Wonderland<\/span>), and Natasha Rothwell (<\/span>Insecure<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Little is known about their roles at the time of writing, and fans will have to wait for more information.<\/p>\n

Wonka plot: how is the movie connected to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Wonka plot will explore Willy Wonka\u2019s backstory, with Chalamet playing a younger version of the character, compared to a 38-year-old Wilder and a 42-year-old Depp.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not much else is known about the story, but if we w<\/span>ere to hazard a guess, we\u2019d presume the upcoming film will\u00a0<\/span>explore how the titular character became the reclusive and neurotic owner of the candy empire we see in Dahl\u2019s novel.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, as detailed above, it won\u2019t be a dark origin story as many might expect, but will instead be an uplifting film stuffed with joyous musical numbers.<\/span><\/p>
