The docufilm explores the extreme sport largely through the eyes of world-record-setting Italian diver Alessia Zecchini, u<\/span>sing real footage, as well as some archive and reconstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n In the opening scenes of the documentary, which has been directed by Laura McGann, Zecchini talks about the correlation between free-diving and death.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI think if someone has to die, they will,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s a bold statement on risk-taking that comes to define the Netflix<\/a> documentary, which soon takes an even darker turn as we discover what happened to Zecchini\u2019s partner Stephen Keenan, an Irish record-setting free-diver and safety instructor, on one fateful day <\/span>during a free dive off the coast of Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n So who is Zecchini, and what happened to the athlete and her diving partner? Read on to find out.<\/p>\n Alessia Zecchini is an Italian free-diver who has set many world records in the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Inspired by Natalia Molchanova, a legendary Russian champion free-diver, Zecchini\u2019s passion and talent for the sport began at a young age, but she was barred from competing until she reached 18.<\/span><\/p>\n By her early 20s, Zecchini was a formidable international contender.<\/p>\n Stephen Keenan was Zecchini\u2019s safety driver. <\/span>He tragically passed away in July 2017 at the age of 39 whilst overseeing a dive by Zecchini into<\/span> The Blue Hole of Egypt \u2013 one of the most risky dive sites in the world.<\/p>\n Despite meticulously planning the descent, which included a swim through an underwater tunnel without a guiding rope, Zecchini and Keenan\u2019s timings didn\u2019t quite go to plan.<\/span><\/p>\n Keenan was supposed to meet her at the other end of the tunnel but, when Zecchini made it through, she was unable to locate the rope that would guide her to the surface and ended up swimming in the wrong direction.<\/span><\/p>\n Keenan <\/span>reached her around the 50m depth and helped guide her to the surface, but he is thought to have blacked out at some point and ultimately died saving Zecchini.<\/span><\/p>\n At the very end of the Netflix documentary, Zecchini reflects on the dive that led to Keenan\u2019s death, saying<\/span>: \u201cMaybe I could have done more. <\/span>If I\u2019d been more conscious, I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n She continues: \u201cThe worst thing is we couldn\u2019t do anything, we couldn\u2019t save him. He rescued me, but I couldn\u2019t rescue him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In Zecchini\u2019s most <\/span>recent <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> post<\/span>, which was posted ahead of the documentary\u2019s release on 18th July, she wrote: \u201cThe only reason I agreed to be a part of [the documentary] is to let the world know what a wonderful and special person [Keenan] was, so that even those who don\u2019t know what free-diving is can appreciate his immense humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Zecchini, now 31, continues to work as a professional free-diver.<\/span><\/p>\n According to her official website<\/a>, she <\/span>is the holder of 35 world records and has been awarded 17 world gold medals.<\/span><\/p>\n She has achieved a descent of -177m at Vertical Blue with a Monofin.<\/span><\/p>\n The Deepest Breath is available to watch on Netflix.
