Over seven series (and with one more to go), Sam Heughan has made his name as a kilt-wearing hunk in Outlander<\/a>, the steamy time-travel romance co-starring Caitr\u00edona Balfe.<\/p>\n For nearly a decade, the pair (aka time-crossed lovers Jamie and Claire Fraser) have been sharing longing looks across the glens in 18th-century Scotland \u2014 but with the series\u2019 days numbered, Heughan already has another torrid TV romance (and a New Zealand bromance) on the cards\u2026<\/p>\n Your Outlander days are numbered (the penultimate series is on TV and the last is coming soon). Are you feeling bereft?<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s been such a crazy, incredible, rewarding journey. Ten years, seven seasons in, and we\u2019re going to do one more eventually. But I think we\u2019re coming to realise we\u2019re towards the end, and that it\u2019s going to be quite a life-changing moment. The show has been my life for a long time. I\u2019ve made friends, we\u2019re basically a family, and it\u2019s going to be very odd not to see everyone again. When we finished series seven, we all realised that was the last but one. And you could feel it\u2026 There\u2019s going to be a lot of sadness.<\/p>\n In recent years, Outlander has moved from Scotland, and now it\u2019s set against the American Revolution. Have you had to brush up on your history?<\/strong><\/p>\n Yeah, I mean, I guess you know these names, but I didn\u2019t really know much about it \u2013 it\u2019s been fascinating. In this show we\u2019ve visited the Jacobite uprising in 1745 and Bonnie Prince Charlie, and we\u2019ve been in Versailles, the court of King Louis, and then we\u2019re in America and the forming of modern America, and then the War of Independence. It\u2019s incredible, the scale of the show and also the history involved. We\u2019re obviously a fiction but we try to stick as closely to historical accuracy as possible.<\/p>\n You\u2019ve been working as Caitr\u00edona Balfe\u2019s on-screen husband for a decade \u2014 does it ever feel like being married?<\/strong><\/p>\n Of course. I mean, when we started, we were both pretty green, working a bit, but not at this level. We\u2019ve sort of grown up together, I think, experienced our first fan events, our first red carpets and press junkets and coming to New York for the first time. We\u2019re kind of like brother and sister, really. And it\u2019s also nice to see both of us having our careers and success outside Outlander as well. It\u2019ll be weird to say goodbye.<\/p>\n Well, we\u2019re talking about the end\u2026 but is it true you haven\u2019t even shot the last series yet?<\/strong><\/p>\n True! And this current series is split into two, so there\u2019ll be another half-series next year, followed by the final series after that. And then, of course, we\u2019ve got Men in Kilts in between! So there\u2019s a lot going on before we even get to the last series.<\/p>\n Men in Kilts is your travel show with Outlander co-star Graham McTavish \u2014 could that continue even after the main show ends?<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh, wow. Who knows? Season two, for which we were in New Zealand, is coming out in August. That was a great adventure and really fun. We\u2019ve got ideas and we\u2019d love to do another one. But I guess we\u2019ll see what our bosses say and if the fans enjoy it. We love making it. I love working with Graham and driving him mad and exploring new places together.<\/p>\n And there\u2019s an Outlander prequel in the works, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n Yeah, they\u2019ve commissioned Blood of My Blood, about Jamie\u2019s parents. I guess it\u2019s a legacy, right? It\u2019s what we\u2019ve created. When we first went to Scotland and we created the studio where we shoot Outlander, there was nothing there and now it\u2019s this huge facility. It\u2019s created so many jobs in Scotland, so many people have been employed. I\u2019m sure the new show will be just as successful, if not more so<\/a>.<\/p>\n Would you pop in for a quick cameo?<\/strong><\/p>\n I mean, I\u2019ll never say no. But I think it could be pretty difficult as it\u2019s about Jamie\u2019s parents when they\u2019re young\u2026<\/p>\n But Outlander is a show about time travel?<\/strong><\/p>\n Well, it is. Unfortunately, Jamie can\u2019t time travel, as far as I know. Just Claire. But you never know. That\u2019s the joy of the show.<\/p> While we wait for more episodes, do you have any other steamy TV shows for fans to look forward to?<\/strong><\/p>\n Yeah, I\u2019m shooting one at the moment! It\u2019s fantastic<\/a>. It\u2019s called The Couple Next Door<\/a>, based on a Dutch book and TV show about a couple that move to a new neighbourhood and meet their neighbours\u2026 who happen to be swingers! And everything that ensues there. It\u2019s an amazing cast \u2013 Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica De Gouw and Alfred Enoch \u2013 they\u2019re incredible. I\u2019m really enjoying shooting that, it\u2019s a really cool show. And I think it\u2019s been announced it\u2019s going to be on [Outlander broadcaster] Starz in the US as well, and Channel 4 in the UK.<\/p>\n There\u2019s your inspiration for the shock Outlander series eight finale\u2026 Jamie and Claire become swingers!
