After all, western attempts at remaking popular anime properties have typically ended in disaster, with Speed Racer, Ghost in the Shell<\/a>, Death Note and Cowboy Bebop<\/a> among the worst offenders.<\/p>\n There\u2019s every chance, however, that One Piece<\/a> could shatter the trend, with creator Eiichiro Oda heavily involved in the series and star I\u00f1aki Godoy reiterating the crew\u2019s commitment to honouring the original.<\/p> He told SFX Magazine<\/a> (before the SAG-AFTRA strike): \u201cWe want to honour the work of Mr Oda and the whole history of One Piece. We respect it, we love it, we think it\u2019s great. And the live action definitely stays true to the source material.<\/p>\n \u201cThe history of One Piece is great and more people should know about it, because it can inspire you to be the best version of yourself and to be more friendly and follow your dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n Two specific elements that Netflix<\/a>\u2018s One Piece team were \u201casked not to mess with\u201d were the backstories of the Straw Hat pirates \u2013 the eccentric protagonists of the series \u2013 and the powers granted by the franchise\u2019s mysterious devil fruits.<\/p>\n Oda is clearly happy with the results, penning an open letter to fans when the latest trailer dropped, assuring there had been \u201cno compromises\u201d in bringing the series to live-action.<\/p>\n Showrunner Matt Owens, who has previously worked on Marvel\u2019s Luke Cage and Agents of SHIELD, told SFX that gaining the creator\u2019s stamp of approval was a process.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not going to lie, he was tough in the beginning \u2013 this wasn\u2019t the first attempt at a live-action One Piece, and we weren\u2019t the first people to try to express it in a new way,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n \u201cBut I think once he realised we were coming from the right place \u2013 trying to protect this series and create a new avenue for even more people to fall in love with it \u2013 he started to trust us.\u201d<\/p>\n One Piece also stars Mackenyu (Knights of the Zodiac) as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Fear Street<\/a>) as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf<\/a>) as Usopp and Taz Skylar (The Lazarus Project<\/a>) as Sanji.<\/p>\n One Piece is available to stream on Netflix from Thursday 31st August 2023.
