The Depp v Heard court case was one of the most talked-about trials in recent Hollywood history.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, actress Amber Heard wrote an op-ed article for the Washington Post<\/a>, in which she described herself as a \u201cpublic figure representing domestic abuse\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

She did not mention her former husband Johnny Depp by name in the piece, but the actor sued his ex for defamation. Heard then filed a countersuit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the former couple went to court, and the six-week trial was live streamed from Fairfax County Court in Virginia, drawing in a peak of 3.5 million viewers \u2013 the broadcast clocked up 83.9 million hours watched in total.<\/span><\/p>\n

The case was also referred to as a \u2018trial by TikTok\u2019 by many commentators, after social media users started sharing their own opinions on the trial in droves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually, a seven-person jury reached a verdict in June, with Depp winning all three counts of defamation. He was awarded $10.35 million in damages<\/a>, while Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages after winning one of her counterclaims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Directed by past BAFTA nominee Emma Cooper, Depp v Heard is a three-part documentary which aims to explore \u201cwhat happens when the court of public opinion starts to overshadow reality\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

When is Depp v Heard on Netflix?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Cooper\u2019s documentary is set to land on Netflix outside the UK on Wednesday 16th August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A UK release date for the series is yet to be confirmed by the streamer. Depp v Heard actually debuted on Channel 4 earlier this year, though, so all three episodes are currently available to watch on the broadcaster\u2019s own streaming platform. <\/span><\/p>\n

What is the documentary about?<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to <\/span>Netflix<\/span><\/a>, Depp v Heard will show the testimonies of both parties \u201cside by side for the first time\u201d, using 200 hours of live-streamed coverage along with footage from \u201ccitizen commentators\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its goal, the streamer says, is to present \u201ca neutral overview of what happens when the court of public opinion starts to overshadow reality\u201d, and to interrogate \u201cthe role social media played in the trial\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
