The series follows Alice and Cheryl, two women who have both at one time been targets of Petrie\u2019s conman Rob.<\/p>\n
In the first episode, Cheryl meets Rob at an event hosted by Jacobi\u2019s Sir Ralph Unwin, described as the UK\u2019s second favourite natural historian and broadcaster. Unwin has seemingly been totally taken in by Rob, who is claiming to be a climate scientist.<\/p>\n
Speaking exclusively with RadioTimes.com<\/a>, the show\u2019s creators Penelope and Ginny Skinner explained how Jacobi\u2019s casting came about, with Penelope saying: \u201cI very much remember the day when we found out he was going to do it. I guess, Ralph Unwin\u2019s the nation\u2019s second favourite natural historian and broadcaster \u2013 we needed somebody with that kind of\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLike a national treasure,\u201d Ginny then added, with Penelope saying that the casting was \u201creally exciting\u201d.<\/p>\n Explaining his character\u2019s role in the story, Penelope said: \u201cHe\u2019s the worst person you can think of to have been taken in, because he has a life\u2019s work dedicated to doing real climate change activism, and for that to be jeopardised, he just has so much to lose if it turns out that he\u2019s been taken in.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI guess we just wanted to touch on another of Rob\u2019s victims and try to express that scale.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, because he has a lot to lose, but so do all of us if he\u2019s taken in,\u201d Ginny added. \u201cAnd if he\u2019s discredited, then who can we believe in?\u201d<\/p> Penelope said, \u201cYeah, that\u2019s the real insidious nature of what Rob is doing, I guess,\u201d while Ginny added, \u201cDestroying our trust.\u201d<\/p>\n The series has been described as \u201ca story about lies and artifice, about our weakness for self-deception, and about the rapid ascent of the modern fraudster\u201d, as well as being \u201cthe story of an unexpected friendship between two very different women, and the power they\u2019ll discover when they raise their voices in joyous rage\u201d.<\/p>\n The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies will launch with weekly\u00a0episodes on BBC One from 29th August.
