Fight Club meets But I\u2019m a Cheerleader <\/span>in Emma Seligman\u2019s and Rachel Sennott\u2019s latest f<\/span>emale-driven dark comedy, Bottoms, which follows their break-out hit Shiva Baby<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Bottoms\u00a0was released in the US last weekend and made huge splash at the box office for an indie film, <\/span>grossing $516,254 (\u00a3409,340) in a limited release on 10 screens.<\/span><\/p>\n The movie follows two queer high school outcasts, PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) as they start an all-girls fight club with the ulterior motive of sleeping with cheerleaders. <\/span><\/p>\n The result? Their fare share of bruised faces and bloody noses.<\/span><\/p> Naming a few of the film\u2019s inspirations, Sennott said in an interview with <\/span>Entertainment Weekly<\/span><\/a>: \u201cWe had references in our mind in terms of <\/span>Scott Pilgrim<\/span>, <\/span>Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/span>, <\/span>Jawbreaker<\/span>\u2026 all these different movies. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut we also wanted to make sure we weren\u2019t [just] doing one and that it was a mash-up of genres. It\u2019s a campy high school movie, but it\u2019s also an action movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Adding that the film also contains its faire share of gore, Sennott continued:<\/span> \u201cI think no one actually thought that we were gonna make it bloody. We had our producers calling [\u2026] they were like, \u2018Just for clarity, it\u2019s not actually a fight club\u2026?\u2019 We were like, \u2018It\u2019s a fight club!’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
