For fans of police procedurals like <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/line-of-duty-season-7-release-date\/&quot;\">Line of Duty<\/a> and <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/criminal-season-3-release-date\/&quot;\">Criminal<\/a>, the slow build of the one-on-one dialogue and the cramped, beige setting will feel all too familiar. For Lauren Lyle, who stars in the scene opposite Game of Thrones\u2019 Rose Leslie (of \u201cYou know nothing, Jon Snow\u201d fame), a police interview was far removed from her normal days on set.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Lyle is best known for her long-running role as Marsali in <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/outlander-season-six-release-date\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Outlander<\/a>, the time-travelling, bodice-ripping period drama. When it comes to TV sets, the actress is more used to 18th-century castles than modern-day police stations; and in the absence of any restrictive corsets, filming was a (quite literal) breath of fresh air.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cIt felt very iconic being in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">police station<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a genuinely tiny room, so it was really intense. And I have never been to jail, so to experience what it feels like to be interrogated\u2026 was cool,\u201d she jokes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Speaking over Zoom, Lyle tells <a href=\"\/\/RadioTimes.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> that she was attracted to Vigil because it\u2019s very different from Outlander \u2013 and that additionally, she was excited to \u201clook like s***\u201d on camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cI remember my makeup artist on Outlander saying, \u2018What did I want to do after that season? What did I want to do next?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I just want to do something where I can look really rough and ready\u2019. Because Marsali\u2026 is so well put together, and always looks perfect. And everyone in period dramas like, you have to look \u2013 you\u2019re so meticulously planned, like every hair, it\u2019s matched and set. I remember going back to her [the make-up artist] in [Outlander] season six and being like, \u2018I got to look like s***\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Lyle\u2019s character in Vigil is Jade, a protestor who\u2019s firmly opposed to nuclear weapons (many of which can be found on HMS Vigil, the fictional submarine that lends its name to the drama). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">It\u2019s difficult to fully introduce Jade without veering into spoiler territory \u2013 the show is filled with twists and turns. However, suffice to say that Jade is strong-willed; plays a key role in the series; and (judging from the audience reaction at the drama\u2019s BFI screening) has an unexpectedly humorous introduction. And [she] is someone that the police end up needing and has a lot of information to give, but isn\u2019t willing to give [that information] up until she really has to,\u201d Lyle teases.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Filming Vigil \u201cwas super different\u201d from Outlander, says Lyle. She enjoyed speaking with her own accent in the series. \u201cI\u2019ve got a real lilt that I put on for [Marsali], that\u2019s a lot more Highlands period; I remove my Glasgow accent. Whereas with this, I was able to just do my own accent \u2013 and also live in a very dangerous mindset. Jade has a really dangerous mindset, and a really strong sense of what she believes in and what she stands for\u2026 I really enjoyed playing something where every move she makes, she risks her life to an extent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">She continues: \u201cSo it was totally different \u2013 and also just gets me [into] a pair of jeans. That\u2019s the thing. No corset.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Lyle knew that the <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/vigil-cast-bbc-series\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Vigil cast<\/a> would be impressive, but it wasn\u2019t until the table read that she realised just how many stars were lined up to take part; among them Suranne Jones, Line of Duty\u2019s Martin Compston, three major Game of Thrones alum (Rose Leslie, Daniel Portman, and Stephen Dillane), Endeavour\u2019s Shaun Evans, Peep Show\u2019s Paterson Joseph, and <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/sex-education-season-3-release-date\/&quot;\">Sex Education<\/a>\u2019s Connor Swindells. As Lyle puts it, \u201cWe\u2019ve got someone from every show that\u2019s big on TV right now\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">The actress also spotted a former Outlander co-star, Gary Lewis (who played <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">Colum MacKenzie)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cI think I was one of the last ones to arrive, and I turned around and I saw Gary Lewis. We were like, \u2018Oh my God\u2019. So the two of us were hugging and having a great time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Vigil kicks off with a suspicious death on a submarine, and a police detective, DCI Amy Silva (played by Jones), is sent to conduct a three-day investigation onboard. The series is then split into two distinct investigations: the underwater investigation led by Amy, and the police inquiries conducted back on land by her colleague (and, it seems, potential love interest) Kirsten (played by Leslie).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Jade\u2019s storyline takes place on land, but Lyle jokes about bagging an invite to the exclusive \u2018submarine cast\u2019 WhatsApp group. \u201cMartin [Compston], he said something about the WhatsApp group. How did she find filming Outlander with social distancing rules in place \u2013 particularly for a show that\u2019s well known for its more intimate scenes?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cIt was really hard,\u201d she says. \u201cI found it really hard having to not mix with everyone in the way that we normally would\u2026 We couldn\u2019t socialise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Lyle \u201cfelt very lucky to be working,\u201d but describes an intense, rigorous testing process, with COVID-19 tests administered multiple times a week, even on days off, and double testing ahead of \u201cany intimate stuff\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">In the previous Outlander season, Lyle\u2019s character Marsali had an expanded storyline that was interwoven with one of its more controversial moments: in the season five finale, lead character Dr Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) was gang-raped. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">The scene, which had a mixed reaction among both viewers and critics alike, was graphic and upsetting. As an <\/span><a href=\"\/\/ew.com\/tv\/outlander-season-5-finale-claire-shocker\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight:\">Entertainment Weekly comment piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:\"> opined, it was \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:\">a sobering reminder that graphic depictions of sexual violence remain an oft-used trope in the [Outlander] saga\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cI can totally understand it. I can totally understand that it\u2019s very triggering for people,\u201d says Lyle when I ask her about the rape scene and resulting controversy. \u201cI would say that the guys [in] the production team did a really great job of researching and having support lines. It was really delicately handled. But of course, I mean, it\u2019s really dark content. So I can completely understand people finding that triggering. And I think it\u2019s natural that you may [find it triggering], I mean, I\u2019ve found it difficult to watch,\u201d she says, before immediately clarifying, \u201cI mean, actually I didn\u2019t really watch it. I don\u2019t really watch Outlander that [much] to be honest, because you\u2019re doing it every day. And you\u2019re there, and you know what\u2019s gonna happen, and also, like you say, there\u2019s a lot of intimate scenes [starring] my friends. So I don\u2019t really have any need \u2013 and so much of it [is intimate scenes], so I don\u2019t really watch it. I\u2019ve seen elements of [the rape scene]. And I think Caitriona handled it really gracefully. She\u2019s so intelligent, and all of her intentions are in the right place. In season six, \u201cit continues to just get quite a lot darker\u201d for Marsali as she deals with the fall-out of the murder, says Lyle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Marsali is one half of the three central Outlander couples: Claire and Jamie, Brianna and Roger, and Marsali and Fergus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cMarsali and Fergus have always been this fun, romantic couple \u2013 young, cool \u2013 like the ones that make people laugh and are just really in love with each other and have all these kids. And this time [in season six], it just got really deep and really dark. They\u2019re at their most tested,\u201d Lyle explains. \u201cIt\u2019s the most tumultuous time that we\u2019ve seen them and their relationship [in]. And Marsali really has, this season \u2013 it\u2019s the first time you see her having to step up, and she\u2019s sort of supporting the family and dealing with her own needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">Outside of Outlander, it doesn\u2019t seem that Lyle is lining up any other period dramas in her future. Instead, she\u2019s set to play the title role in another upcoming police procedural, the three-part ITV series Karen Pirie, which she describes as the \u201cbest job\u201d she\u2019s ever done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cI\u2019ve got Karen Pirie coming out, which is my new big ITV drama, which is like the ride of my life. It was the best job I\u2019ve ever done. It was unreal. I can\u2019t believe someone\u2019s let me play a Detective Sergeant. It\u2019s ridiculous. I love it, it\u2019s amazing. And it\u2019s good. So I\u2019m really excited for people to see that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">As for Vigil, Lyle teases that the series is \u201cgripping, thrilling, and dangerous,\u201d guaranteed to keep viewers guessing right up until the end. With so many plot threads to keep track of, scrolling on your devices is a definite \u2018no\u2019. Her advice? \u201cTurn off your phone and concentrate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vigil\u00a0begins at 9pm on\u00a0Sunday\u00a029th August on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with episode two airing at 9pm on the Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August.\u00a0Vigil\u00a0will then continue weekly each\u00a0Sunday\u00a0at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking for something else to watch?
