The actor explains how he “couldn’t take off the costume”. <\/p>
Colin Farrell has revealed the physical transformation he went through to take on the role of a vicious harpooner in BBC Two\u2019s period drama, The North Water<\/a>.<\/p>\n Based on the novel of the same name by Ian McGuire, the story is set primarily in 1859 and takes place aboard whaling ship The Volunteer, with disgraced surgeon Patrick Sumner (Jack O\u2019Connell) and harpooner Henry Drax (Farrell) being the two lead characters.<\/p>\n Some fans may hardly recognise Farrell in the disturbing role \u2013 he has gained a considerable amount of weight to add to the character\u2019s physicality, and he\u2019s sporting an unkempt beard and long hair.<\/p>\n These changes are why the True Detective<\/a> star describes the \u201cunusual\u201d feeling of not being able to take off his costume, but he says it was \u201ca great benefit\u201d to his performance to undertake such a transformation.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was a fairly explicitly described character physically [in the book],\u201d Farrell said at a recent press event. \u201cThere was a certain kind of power to his body \u2013 the way he filled space, the way he moves through space \u2013 and a certain brute strength that he had, and the confidence of a man that carries himself with with a keen awareness of that brute strength.\u201d<\/span><\/p> While many actors have followed complex diet and exercise plans to transform themselves for major roles, Farrell revealed that he kept things relatively simple while preparing to embody Henry Drax.<\/p>\n \u201cI did get fairly strong,\u201d he said. \u201cLook, I just put on weight. I just lifted weights and ate, and that\u2019s all. Anyone could do it really, although I wouldn\u2019t advise it. And that was it. <\/span>You couldn\u2019t take off the costume. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI couldn\u2019t really step away from the character. <\/span>I couldn\u2019t get out of the costume, he was always with me. It was a great benefit to me because it just meant 24 hours a day, seven days a week for however many weeks we shot, I was constantly inhabiting this physical space that was very different for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The North Water is coming soon to BBC Two.
