Since the beginning of the hit series, it has been implied that the Second World War-era military strategist is actually gay, although it\u2019s unclear whether he realises this himself.<\/p>\n
The most direct acknowledgement of this storyline came in season 2\u2019s Redding Weddy, when a moving flashback alluded to The Captain\u2019s romantic feelings towards his second-in-command, Lieutenant Havers (Peter Sandys-Clarke).<\/p>\n
Since then, fans have been devouring every hint, clue and reference as to what happened next \u2013 including how The Captain became a restless ghost wandering the grounds of Button House. It\u2019s now been confirmed we\u2019ll know more soon.<\/p>
Speaking to press ahead of the launch of Ghosts<\/a> season 5, co-creator and star Mathew Baynton said: \u201cIt\u2019s fair to say there\u2019s a couple of backstories that the audience will have been waiting for.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are still some unsolved mysteries and this is the final series \u2013 and we wouldn\u2019t leave our audience with those unanswered questions.\u201d<\/p>\n Willbond later confirmed that The Captain\u2019s story is one such arc that will see some long-awaited resolution.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have to dig into his backstory a little more, because we were sort of owed it in the writing process,\u201d he teased. \u201cSo we have gone there. I think he is happy deep down, but I think he just needs a bit more time.\u201d<\/p>\n At an advance screening of the first two episodes of season 5, Willbond also warned that his big episode could be a tear-jerker.<\/p>\n When asked what his proudest moment from the entire series would be, he responded: \u201cIt\u2019s a scene that we\u2019ve shot but you haven\u2019t seen. All I can say is: I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Baynton offered thoughts on the journey that The Captain and his fellow ghosts have been on since mortal homeowner Alison (Charlotte Ritchie<\/a>) gained the ability to see them.<\/p>\n \u201cAlison having that accident has changed their afterlives ultimately for the better,\u201d he explained. \u201cAt the beginning, [the show] seems to be saying \u2018people don\u2019t change\u2019 \u2013 it doesn\u2019t matter how long you stick around, you just fundamentally don\u2019t change\u2026<\/p>\n \u201cAnd by the end, it feels like what it\u2019s about is the fact that Alison does change them. In some ways big and in some ways small, she improves their lives just by being there.
