{"id":38336,"date":"2023-10-20T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T06:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1909583"},"modified":"2023-10-20T09:42:10","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T07:42:10","slug":"foe-writer-ive-never-seen-paul-mescal-do-anything-like-this","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/foe-writer-ive-never-seen-paul-mescal-do-anything-like-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Foe writer: \u2018I\u2019ve never seen Paul Mescal do anything like this\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Mescal and Saoirse Ronan star in the new sci-fi-tinged relationship drama. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 20 October 2023 at 06:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Paul Mescal has enjoyed an incredible run of success in recent years \u2013 from his breakout role in Normal People to his Oscar-nominated turn in last year\u2019s hugely acclaimed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/how-to-watch-aftersun\/\">Aftersun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also has a number of other exciting projects in the pipeline: he stars opposite Andrew Scott in festival hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/all-strangers-andrew-haigh-paul-mescal-newsupdate-exclusive\/\">All of Us Strangers<\/a>, leads the cast of the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/gladiator-2-release-date\/\">Gladiator<\/a> sequel, and will play a key part in Richard Linklater\u2019s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along, which is being filmed over 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>But before all that, he stars alongside fellow Irish Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan in the new film Foe, a sci-fi-tinged relationship drama based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Foe-Pa-Iain-Reid\/dp\/147117798X\/?tag=radtim0b-21&amp;ascsubtag=radiotimes-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored noopener noreferrer\">book by Iain Reid<\/a> and directed by Australian filmmaker Garth Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Mescal and Ronan play Junior and Hen, a couple living on a remote farm in 2065 who begin to question their relationship when a stranger shows up with an alarming piece of news about their future.<\/p> <p>And speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> ahead of the release, Reid teased that the performances from both actors are unlike anything he\u2019s seen from either of them \u2013 exceeding the expectations he had when he first wrote the characters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cI mean, it is surreal,\u201d he said when asked about seeing his characters brought to life in both Foe and the previous adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Thinking-Ending-Things-Iain-Reid\/dp\/1911231367\/?tag=radtim0b-21&amp;ascsubtag=radiotimes-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored noopener noreferrer\">his work<\/a>, Charlie Kaufman\u2019s 2020 film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/im-thinking-of-ending-things-explained\/\">I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cBut in both cases, actually, it exceeds what I imagine and think when I first start writing the novel. I\u2019m actually not really imagining sort of real people \u2013 they\u2019re these nebulous ideas in my mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cI know the characters very well, but I\u2019m not so much thinking about them physically or imagining them being embodied in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he \u201ccouldn\u2019t believe it\u201d when Mescal, Ronan and co-star Aaron Pierre were cast in the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u201cThese are such great, talented actors,\u201d he said, \u201cand I was so excited to see what they would do, how they would interpret the material and bring something to it, and they exceeded anything I ever thought could happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cI mean, they go to places that I wasn\u2019t expecting them to go to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">He continued: \u201cI had been a fan of all of them and don\u2019t think I had seen them do anything quite like this. And that\u2019s when I came across Paul Mescal, who I met in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cHe was crazy about the film and really wanted to play Junior and really wanted to go into this relationship and all of those different characters he had to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd it was just lovely that they had the shared Irish heritage, it was not something we were planning.
