{"id":38374,"date":"2023-10-21T20:09:13","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T18:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1912317"},"modified":"2023-10-22T06:41:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T04:41:07","slug":"sir-bobby-charlton-tributes-pour-in-after-death-of-football-icon","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/sir-bobby-charlton-tributes-pour-in-after-death-of-football-icon\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Bobby Charlton tributes pour in after death of football icon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> The England and Manchester United legend was 86. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 21 October 2023 at 18:09 PM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>The world of football is paying tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton after the English football icon died aged 86.<\/p>\n<p>Charlton was a legend for Manchester United and England and was a key part of the Three Lions side that won the World Cup in 1966, while he also won the Ballon D\u2019Or that same year.<\/p>\n<p>He scored 49 goals for England in 106 caps, a record at the time and still the third-highest of any player to represent the national team.<\/p>\n<p>At club level, he joined Manchester United as a youth player in 1953 and stayed there for 20 years, representing the Old Trafford side on 758 occasions in all competitions and scoring 249 times \u2013 placing him second in the all-time lists for both appearances and goals.<\/p>\n<p>His time in Manchester saw him win a glut of trophies including three league titles and a Europan Cip, while he would later go on to play for Preston North End \u2013 where he was player-manager \u2013 and Waterford towards the end of his career.<\/p>\n<p>The news of his death was announced by his family this afternoon (Saturday 21s October), with a short statement saying he \u201cpassed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning\u201d.\u00a0 He had previously been diagnosed with dementia in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>His former club Manchester United paid tribute with a statement calling him a \u00a0\u201chero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement continued: \u201c<span data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">\u201cHis unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">\u201cThe club\u2019s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\">The FA also released a statement calling him \u201ca true legend of our game\u201d and signing off: \u201cWe will never forget you, Sir Bobby.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton.<br\/><br\/>An integral part of our 1966 FIFA World Cup winning campaign, Sir Bobby won 106 caps and scored 49 times for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ThreeLions?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ThreeLions<\/a>.<br\/><br\/>A true legend of our game. We will never forget you, Sir Bobby \u2764\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ft9MlutBWm\">pic.twitter.com\/Ft9MlutBWm<\/a><\/p>\u2014 England (@England) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/England\/status\/1715752476878455025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"\/>\n<p data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\">Meanwhile a huge number of footballers past and present took to social media to pay tribute to the star, with current England manager Gareth Southgate describing him as \u201cone of our most iconic players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".katvb7an66.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\">He added: \u201cThe privilege of meeting him on several occasions allowed me to understand his personal pride and emotion in having represented England and simply confirmed in my mind his standing as one of the gentlemen of the game.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".3ck4035sv6.0.2.0.0.1.0.$lx-commentary.$lx-commentary.2.0.1.1.1:$post-65340ae0fd63b979e1ace931.0.6.0.0:$post_4\">\u201cThe world of football will unite in its sadness at losing an undisputed legend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geoff Hurst \u2013 who played alongside Charlton in the 1966 World Cup and is now the only surviving member of that squad wrote on X (formerly Twitter): \u201cVery sad news today. One of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away. We will never forget him and nor will all of football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great colleague and friend, he will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone. Condolences to his family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary Lineker wrote \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Deeply saddened to hear that Sir Bobby Charlton has died. A truly wonderful footballer and genuinely lovely man. A World Cup winner, <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@ManUtd <\/span>great and, for me, England\u2019s greatest-ever player. He may no longer be with us but he\u2019ll have footballing immortality.
