\u201cThey\u2019re both incredibly driven, they\u2019re both experienced, but they\u2019re coming from different backgrounds, they\u2019ve had different journeys to get to where they are, this level of seniority,\u201d Alison O\u2019Donnell told RadioTimes.com<\/a> exclusively.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve described it as being a very restless relationship, it never really settles down. And I think it\u2019s quite an unusual dynamic for TV. I\u2019m not sure I can think of lots of examples of a relationship like that. They don\u2019t immediately become best friends, but they\u2019re not enemies, they have a common goal.<\/p> \u201cAnd they don\u2019t have time to get to know each other, they\u2019re straight in at the deep end. And sometimes they knock against each other, and sometimes they really hit a rhythm.<\/p>\n \u201cIt just depends what they\u2019re faced with on that day, what point they\u2019re at in the case.\u201d<\/p>\n Exploring the relationship between Tosh and Ruth was a \u201creally, really rewarding\u201d experience for O\u2019Donnell, who had spent the previous nine years acting alongside Douglas Henshall as Jimmy Perez.<\/p>\n \u201cYou could never get complacent with it,\u201d she said of the show\u2019s new chapter. \u201cThere was always something new coming up the path.<\/p>\n \u201cI never got to the point where I was like, \u2018Oh actually, I really know what I\u2019m doing with Ashley\u2019 because the next day we would be filming something completely different again.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n Ruth, who left Shetland many years ago, reluctantly heads back to the isles to retrieve a key witness, with the case pushing everyone to their limit.<\/p>\n \u201cSo many things get thrown up, and they both move from the front foot to the back foot,\u201d said O\u2019Donnell, adding: \u201cAnd from the absolute word go, there\u2019s so much jeopardy there. They\u2019re up against it in terms of time, in terms of stakes, so there isn\u2019t the luxury of settling in. They just have to be really, really light on their feet.<\/p>\n \u201cBoth of them to try to keep abreast of what\u2019s happening in the case, keep abreast of what each other is thinking and how that relationship is going, so it just never relents.
