But it’ll be tricky in a village like Darrowby, where the close-knit community may not take too kindly to Helen’s decision – especially if she moves on too quickly.

Channel 5 recently released a synopsis: “Three months have passed since the events of series one. A trip back home to Glasgow presents James with a dilemma that will mean choosing between the people he loves. As Helen and James navigate their feelings for one another, Siegfried, Tristan, and Mrs Hall are also forced to consider their places in the world, while James must ultimately decide between duty and love.”

Writer Ben Vanstone told Salon: “There’s an intention to earn that relationship in a way between James and Helen. I think it’d be easy just to let them sort of fall together if people knowing the books understand where they end up, but we want to explore why they’re together and and why they work with one another.”

Then there’s the question of whether Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse) will ever find out he failed one of his veterinary exams, and is not qualified after all. Having lied about what was in the letter (and then burned it), Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) saved the family from a miserable Christmas; but will he admit the truth, or keep the secret? And could he be rumbled when Tristan begins practising as a vet?

Vanstone revealed: “In series two, we begin with Tristan unaware of what his brother has done. And, Siegfried, he’s very much done this because he’s so desperate to move forward in his relationship with his brother.”

In terms of widower Siegfried’s love life, things are looking positive for his relationship with Dorothy (Maimie McCoy) after he summoned all his bravery and kissed her after the Christmas Eve party.
