Shortly after she turned 18, Ruth packed up her belongings and left the isles for good \u2013 and she had no intention of returning.<\/p>\n
But 30 years on from her exit, she\u2019s back, much to the delight of ex-boyfriend Cal (Jamie Sives) <\/span>and the local gossipmongers.<\/p>\n In the short time we\u2019ve spent with Ruth, who arrived following Jimmy Perez\u2019s departure<\/a>, we\u2019ve not learned an awful lot about her, but we do know she had a strained relationship with her father, who was a reverend, a job her brother Alan took on following his death.<\/p>\n But details about the specifics of their feud were firmly under wraps.<\/p>\n In tonight\u2019s episode (Wednesday 15th November), however, we discovered that he had an affair with a woman called Jean Ferguson (Jennifer Black) while Ruth\u2019s mother was dying in hospital.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a difficult time,\u201d said Jean, who wanted to \u201cclear the air\u201d with Ruth.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m sure it suited you to think of me as the evil woman these past 30 years, but I\u2019m not. I loved your father, and I think he loved me. I\u2019m not ashamed of it.\u201d<\/p>\n But Ruth had no desire to listen.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, it didn\u2019t seem all that difficult when I found you in my mum\u2019s bed,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a deeply uncomfortable moment, with both parties clearly still hurt by the events of the past.
