It\u2019s official: Jodie Whittaker is leaving Doctor Who<\/a>. Rumours had followed Thirteen for months before the BBC confirmed the news, also announcing that Doctor Who<\/a> showrunner Chris Chibnall would also be exiting the show.<\/p>\n Of course, the question on fans\u2019 minds since the news was made official is who could replace Whittaker as the Doctor<\/a>. And one name that keeps popping up is Michaela Coel\u2019s.<\/p>\n The writer, director and star of the much lauded I May Destroy You<\/a> is a bookies\u2019 favourite to take on the Time Lord mantle but, with a few high-profile projects in the works \u2013 including an undisclosed role in Black Panther 2<\/a> \u2013 it seemed a long shot. Until now.<\/p> The Chewing Gum star was asked by a\u00a0Guardian reader<\/a>\u00a0if she would ever consider playing the Doctor.<\/p>\n \u201cI never say never to anything,\u201d she rather mysteriously said. \u201cI guess that\u2019s my answer.\u201d<\/p>\n Though fans had speculated such a role might not appeal to Coel, who tends to take on creative roles behind the scenes as well as starring ones in her projects, her casting in Black Panther 2 and, before that, Black Mirror certainly offer hope.<\/p>\n Before Whittaker leaves, however, season 13 will see her face off to some \u201ctruly iconic\u201d Doctor Who enemies<\/a>, including the Weeping Angels.<\/p>\n John Bishop has also joined the cast as the Doctor\u2019s latest companion, alongside Game of Thrones star\u00a0Jacob Anderson as Vinder<\/a> \u2013 a character who Chibnall said \u201cmakes you root for him, and he breaks your heart\u201d.<\/p>\n Looking for something else to watch?
