Disney is gearing up to release its latest animated film, Wish<\/a>, a self-referential fairy tale about the power of wishing to mark the studio\u2019s 100th anniversary.<\/span><\/p>\n

The film revolves around 17-year-old Asha (West Side Story\u2019s Ariana DeBose), who wishes upon a star to save the kingdom from the villainous King Magnifico (Chris Pine), a sorcerer who holds the power to decide whose wishes can come true. <\/span><\/p>\n

Chaos ensues when Asha manages to<\/span>\u00a0summon Star, a cartoony, cosmic force.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie also attempts to honour Disney\u2019s legacy by combining a hand-drawn aesthetic, hearkening back to classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio, with CGI animation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking about the unique animation style, Disney\u2019s c<\/span>hief creative officer Jennifer Lee told <\/span>IndieWire<\/a>: \u201c<\/span>I think with Wish, what we were realistic about with ourselves is based on where we are technology-wise, the schedules, what we do.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot going backwards from the power of CG and what it\u2019s given us, but really pushing to make sure that the hand-drawn is coming with it. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery frame is built layer upon layer. And when you can get Lisa Keene\u2019s painting to resonate and then become not just three-dimensional but actually animated, that was the ultimate goal for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking about whether Disney would ever bring to life a project that is strictly hand-drawn only, she added: \u201cWe might. But I don\u2019t know. There\u2019s nothing saying we wouldn\u2019t do that. But it\u2019s a different way to build. It\u2019s a different way to do it. It\u2019s a different production system. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll of those things we recognise, but we don\u2019t want to be afraid of, so we have to continue that legacy. What I\u2019m excited about is we\u2019re seeing a celebration of the fact that animation isn\u2019t here to mimic life. It\u2019s here to transport you in a way that you can surrender to this whole other kind of world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A trailer for the movie was previously released, giving fans a look at a song from Ariana DeBose, a comic voice performance from Chris Pine and a first glimpse at the combination of 2D and 3D animation the film incorporates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wish is set to premiere exclusively in cinemas worldwide on 24th November 2023<\/strong>, meaning there isn\u2019t long to wait at all!<\/span><\/p>\n
