Former Top Gear co-presenter James May has said the show\u2019s format \u201cneeds a rethink\u201d following the BBC\u2019s decision to \u201crest\u201d the UK show<\/a> for the \u201cforeseeable future\u201d.<\/p>\n The BBC\u2019s decision comes after the future of the series was in doubt following Freddie Flintoff\u2019s car accident<\/a>\u00a0in 2022.<\/p>\n Flintoff was involved in a crash at the Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, in December last year while filming on the Top Gear test track, which led to filming for the 34th season being halted.<\/p>\n May, who previously hosted the show alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today Podcast that a new approach to the show is needed.<\/p>\n \u201cMy honest view is \u2013 I can say this now \u2013 it does need a bit of a rethink,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s time for a new format and a new approach to the subject because the subject has not been this interesting, I suspect, since the car has been invented.\u201d<\/p> \u00a0<\/p>\n After Clarkson, May and Hammond left the series in 2015, the trio began working on a new series on Amazon Prime Video<\/a>, The Grand Tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n He noted that since their departure, the motoring series has \u201cfollowed a very similar format and framework to the way we left it\u201d.<\/p>\n He added: \u201cWe\u2019re getting quite old and we already do that. There\u2019s another way. I\u2019m not saying I know what it is but there must be another way of doing a show about cars that will perhaps embrace more fulsomely many of the questions that are being asked about cars now that weren\u2019t for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n “The thing about Top Gear is… it does need a bit of a rethink’
