Following the announcement that a reality TV version of the hit drama Squid Game<\/a> was in the works, many people were unsure what to think, given the series focused on socioeconomic divides and the exploitation of the poor by the rich.<\/p>\n

As per The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s review<\/a> of Squid Game: The Challenge<\/a>, the publication noted that the original Squid Game series served as \u201can extreme example of the dehumanisation of capitalism\u201d, while the reality series \u201cbuilds on the most superficial aspects\u201d of the show.<\/p>\n

However, the executive producers of Squid Game: The Challenge, Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt and John Hay, have denied that the show \u201cmisses the point\u201d of what Squid Game is about.<\/p>

Harcourt told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that he takes issue \u201cover the notion that Squid Game has just one point\u201d.<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cOne of the important strands was the capitalist critique. But it\u2019s also a critique of how we are ingrained from childhood to be ultra competitive via these childhood games. It\u2019s also about how people behave under pressure \u2014 and that\u2019s what makes reality shows interesting.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if it\u2019s an artificial or conceited situation, how do people behave? It was also about camaraderie. Also, the drama was about people fending off their desperate circumstances to win a huge prize. Our show isn\u2019t about people in need. It\u2019s about people being presented with an opportunity. So we flip that on its head.\u201d<\/p>\n
