Enthused as we might be to have David Tennant back in Doctor Who<\/a> \u2013 and not just for a one-off appearance, he\u2019s fronting a new trilogy of episodes \u2013 his reappearance on the show does raise a rather big question that demands an answer. Why does the Fourteenth Doctor look like the Tenth?<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a time-displaced Tenth Doctor \u2013 Tennant is now playing a new incarnation, albeit one who\u2019s revisiting an old face.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch of The Star Beast<\/a>, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies explained that the Fourteenth Doctor might look and sound like his predecessor, but he\u2019s subtly different and\u00a0\u201cslightly more human\u201d in his behaviour.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe says he loves Donna, which he never said in the old days,\u201d Davies pointed out.<\/p>\n

Though this is the first time that Doctor Who has depicted this twist on regeneration on-screen, the idea of the Doctor assuming a face he\u2019s worn before is not unprecedented \u2013 fans will remember that the enigmatic Curator (Tom Baker), who appeared in the show\u2019s 50th anniversary special\u00a0 The Day of the Doctor<\/a>, was heavily implied to be a future Doctor who had taken on a form similar to that of his previous Fourth incarnation.<\/p>

\u201cIn years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few [faces],\u201d the Curator told the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith). \u201cBut just the old favourites, eh?\u201d<\/p>\n

So is it as simple as the Doctor opting \u2013 either consciously or unconsciously \u2013 to revert to a previous physical form?<\/p>\n

The Star Beast saw the Doctor ponder why he resembled\u00a0\u201cthe one in the skinny suit\u201d again, speculating that returning companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) might somehow be involved.<\/p>\n
