The fantastical movie has its roots in a story from Kelly Younger’s childhood. <\/p>
Given that it includes a malicious elf casting a wicked spell, the story of Candy Cane Lane<\/a> might not sound like it would be based on true events \u2013 but screenwriter Kelly Younger has explained how the new film very much has its roots in real life.<\/p>\n Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> shortly after the film\u2019s LA premiere this week, Younger revealed how one aspect of the Eddie Murphy movie is borrowed from his own childhood experiences.<\/p>\n The film unfolds in the El Segundo neighbourhood of LA, where Younger grew up and witnessed firsthand the ultra-competitive festive decorating contests that continue to take place to this day.<\/p> \u201cI have always wanted to write a Christmas movie; it\u2019s my favourite genre,\u201d he revealed. \u201cAnd because of my relationship to El Segundo and Candy Cane Lane, I knew that when I finally came up with an idea, this is where I was going to set it.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking more specifically about his own experiences, he added: \u201cThis one year, my father decorated the front of the house. And he went way over the top, and his house got featured in the local newspaper.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cAnd it was a little controversial because he doesn\u2019t live exactly on Candy Cane Lane, he\u2019s just up the block. So there was this neighbourly tension over, \u2018Does that really count?\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so that\u2019s where the germ of the idea came from. It\u2019s that kind of playful neighbourly competition.\u201d<\/p>\n As for the more fantastical elements of the plot, Younger explained how it only made sense to include some genuine magic in a festive film.<\/p>\n \u201cI love Christmas magic,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I just feel like it wouldn\u2019t be a Christmas movie without some of that sprinkling in there!\u201d<\/p>\n [squirrel-affiliate-playlist squirrel_playlist_id=\u201d609\u2033 \/]<\/p>\n Candy Cane Lane is now streaming on Prime Video.
