If, like us, you\u2019ve already binged all three episodes of\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u2018s documentary, Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife you probably have a lot of questions, including where the thoracic surgeon Paolo Macchiarini is now.<\/p>\n

Macchiarini set out to revolutionise regenerative medicine with his synthetic trachea transplants using stem cells. However, seven out of the eight patients who received one of Paolo\u2019s synergic trachea transplants later died.<\/p>\n

The documentary examines Macchiarini\u2019s private life and how his former fianc\u00e9e, Benita Alexander, went on to expose him and fight for justice.<\/p>\n

Described as \u201cthe biggest conman in medical history\u201d, Benita questioned: \u201cWas this guy a superhero, a super surgeon and the love of my life? Or was he a dangerous conman and a killer?\u201d<\/p>\n

Who is Paolo Macchiarini?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Paolo Macchiarini is a thoracic surgeon and former regenerative medicine researcher who has been convicted of research-related crimes in Italy and Sweden.<\/p>\n

He became well-known in 2008, when he created a new airway for a young woman in Barcelona by chemically stripping away the cells of a windpipe taken from a deceased donor and then seeding the bare scaffold with stem cells from the woman\u2019s bone marrow.<\/p>\n

This proved to be a success and it was declared a medical breakthrough. By 2011, Macchiarini was working in Sweden at one of the world\u2019s most prestigious medical universities.<\/p>\n

He performed the surgery in multiple countries and claimed to be friends with some of the most famous people in the world.<\/p>\n

Macchiarini was previously considered a pioneer in his field, however the surgeon has been accused of unethically performing experimental surgeries, even on healthy patients, which resulted in fatalities for seven of the eight patients who received one of his synergic trachea transplants.<\/p>\n

What is Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife follows the rise and fall of Paolo Macchiarini, who rose to fame with his revolutionary regenerative surgeries.<\/p>\n

However, it soon became apparent that Macchiarini was a manipulator whose fianc\u00e9e was left shattered by his deception.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis nickname was \u2018the super surgeon\u2019 and he was adored and adulated,\u201d says Benita in the trailer. \u201cEverybody was fooled by this man. I was engaged to a monster.\u201d<\/p>\n

As per the synopsis, the \u201cextraordinary\u201d three-part series tells the story of \u201csuper surgeon\u201d Paolo Macchiarini.<\/p>\n

It continues: \u201cPaolo was globally lauded for creating the world\u2019s first plastic organs. Now accused of being a fraud and a fantasist.
