More than 20 years after the first film became an instant claymation classic, a sequel to Chicken Run is finally here \u2013 with Dawn of the Nugget<\/a> now playing in select UK cinemas ahead of a Netflix<\/a> release next week.<\/p>\n A lot has changed for Ginger, Rocky and the rest of the flock when we begin the new film, which finds them living on a utopian island paradise and about to welcome a new chick to their family.<\/p>\n But when that chick grows up to become an intrepid adventurer, old enemies soon rear their heads once again, and the plucky poultry must face off with their evil former owner Mrs Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) if they are to avert a calamity.<\/p> Bringing back the familiar foe for the follow-up might seem like it would have been a no-brainer, but director Sam Fell explained during an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a> that this hadn\u2019t always been the plan.<\/p>\n \u201cFunnily enough, that\u2019s why I\u2019ve been around [on this project] for six years,\u201d he explained. \u201cBecause for the first two years, we didn\u2019t have Mrs Tweedy, we had a male villain \u2013 as we were much more concentrating on Rocky as a character.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so, in that process, it really became clear that Ginger\u2026 it should be the next chapter of Ginger\u2019s story. She\u2019s just such an amazing hero in the first film [which] was an extraordinary, very amazing, sort of feminist movie.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, strong female characters, including Mrs Tweedy.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n He added that the creative team soon decided motherhood should be the main focus of the new film, giving Ginger a daughter that was a \u201cchick off the old block\u201d, and this eventually led them to realise that a rematch with Mrs Tweedy made perfect sense.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat better thing to do?\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we\u2019re thinking about Ginger, we were just thinking about how she would be kind of haunted by the past.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so the rematch, a chance for her re-face off with her nemesis and have to deal with the past, as well as with the present and the future of her daughter, it all came together really nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n While the first film was pitched as \u2018The Great Escape with chickens\u2019, the second is much more expansive in its scale \u2013 and Fell explained that the sequel has a few things in common with one of cinema\u2019s most beloved action franchises.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s Chicken<\/span>: Impossible,\u201d he laughed. \u201cYou know, it\u2019s like, this time they\u2019re breaking in \u2013 that is the tagline. That\u2019s the thing that\u2019s unlocked it.<\/p>\n \u201cIt took forever to get to that. It\u2019s kind of embarrassing how long it\u2019s taken to get this right.
