Julia Sawalha is among the stars from the first film to have been replaced in the sequel. <\/p>
Much has been said about some of the changes made to the cast for the new Chicken Run sequel, Dawn of the Nugget<\/a> \u2013 with the original voice of Ginger, Julia Sawalha, revealing in 2020<\/a> that she was left \u201cfurious\u201d after being told she sounded \u201ctoo old\u201d for the role.<\/p>\n The Absolutely Fabulous star has been replaced by Thandiwe Newton for the new film \u2013 one of several roles to have changed hands \u2013 and so, when RadioTimes.com<\/a> spoke to director Sam Fell, we asked him about the changes, and whether he\u2019d spoken to Sawalha after her aforementioned comments.<\/p>\n \u201cI really love the casting of the first film, it\u2019s really brilliant and I love the first film,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it\u2019s that long ago\u2026 like, when I came to this project, I knew that I wanted to respect the first one, but I also wanted to evolve and make a film for now, for this era, for a new audience, and I\u2019m a new director.\u201d<\/p> He added: \u201cI\u2019ve got my own kind of, like, particular tastes, so there has been a journey to kind of figure out the balance of the two, of the first film into the new world, if you like. So, yeah, it\u2019s been a process.\u201d<\/p>\n Pressed on why some of the other roles \u2013 including Jane Horrocks as Babs and Lynn Ferguson as Mac \u2013 had not also been recast, he explained that he felt that certain characters \u201chadn\u2019t really changed\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all to do with that evolution,\u201d he said. \u201cI think, the main characters have changed the most \u2013 you know, Ginger, Rocky, bringing in Molly (their daughter, voiced by The Last of Us<\/a> star Bella Ramsey).<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a new dynamic.
