Jodie Whittaker\u2019s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated into David Tennant\u2019s Fourteenth in The Power of the Doctor<\/a> last year and, since then, the Time Lord has been questioning why their old face returned.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve had some clues, especially after the Doctor reunited with Catherine Tate\u2019s Donna Noble in The Star Beast. But now we\u2019ve finally got some answers!<\/p>\n In The Giggle, the last of the specials, the pair faced one of the Doctor\u2019s oldest enemies, The Toymaker<\/a>, played by Neil Patrick Harris. With the world driven mad, the Doctor and Donna are taunted by the menacing villain.<\/p>\n As the pair attempt to figure out what\u2019s happening, Donna references the return of Melanie Bush (Bonnie Langford) into the Doctor\u2019s life, asking why he\u2019s never mentioned her before.<\/p>\n She adds that he never stops, telling him: \u201cMaybe that\u2019s why your old face came back. You\u2019re wearing yourself out.\u201d<\/p> Previous episode The Star Beast<\/a> had seen Donna implore the Doctor not to leave her behind and go whizzing off into the universe again, suggesting: \u201cYou could visit with my family. We could do outrageous things like have tea, and dinner, and a laugh.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve been given a second chance \u2013 you can do things different this time. So why don\u2019t you do something completely new and have some friends?\u201d<\/p>\n The Giggle delivered an unprecedented twist, with the Fourteenth Doctor appearing to meet his end, only to experience a \u201cbi-generation\u201d and split into two<\/a>, with the Fifteenth Doctor existing as a separate being.<\/p>\n With two Doctors now co-existing and the universe safe in Fifteen\u2019s capable hands, the Fourteenth Doctor was finally able to take a well-earned break, opting to remain on Earth with Donna and the Noble family.<\/p>\n \u201cI worked out what happened. You changed your face \u2013 and then you found me,\u201d Donna explained. \u201cD\u2019you know why? To come home.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI fought all those battles for all those years\u2026\u201d the Doctor reflected. \u201c\u2026And now I know what for. This.
