{"id":41522,"date":"2023-12-11T11:53:06","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T10:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1942133"},"modified":"2023-12-11T13:46:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T12:46:47","slug":"natalie-portman-breaks-down-scary-challenge-of-may-december-monologue","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/natalie-portman-breaks-down-scary-challenge-of-may-december-monologue\/","title":{"rendered":"Natalie Portman breaks down \u201cscary\u201d challenge of May December monologue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Portman&#8217;s monologue towards the end of Todd Haynes&#8217;s acclaimed drama is one of the film&#8217;s most memorable scenes. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 11 December 2023 at 10:53 AM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>One of the standout moments in Todd Haynes\u2019s acclaimed new drama May December comes in its very closing stages \u2013 when Natalie Portman\u2019s Elizabeth delivers a memorable three-minute monologue straight to camera.<\/p>\n<p>In the scene, Elizabeth is delivering the monologue not as herself, but as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/julianne-moore-may-december-character-exclusive-newsupdate\/\">Julianne Moore<\/a>\u2018s character Gracie \u2013 who she has been studying before portraying her in a television film \u2013 with the speech taking the form of a love letter that Gracie had previously written to her much younger lover Joe.<\/p>\n<p>And, speaking during an exclusive interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Portman revealed how the monologue was \u201can incredible opportunity\u201d for her as an actor.<\/p> <p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s very rare to get something that\u2019s written as precisely as Samy [Burch, screenwriter] wrote that, and then also to have it framed in that way that Todd chose to frame it,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWith this kind of straight onto camera, using the camera as a sort of mirror, which really kind of expresses that concept of reflection and identity and performance, like the reflection as the audience, in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">She added: \u201cAnd then, of course, for the character to have this thing that is <span class=\"searchHighlight\">may<\/span>be the most truthful she is the entire film, but it\u2019s a performance, and to really kind of embrace the artifice of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd the performative aspect of it was really exciting, it was very scary.
