The sitcom has grown to become one of the BBC\u2019s most popular titles since it began, with the creators deciding to wrap things up after five seasons in the interest of ending on a high note.<\/p>\n
There has been much speculation among fans about what the finale could involve, with co-creator Laurence Rickard telling RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press that they were deprived the shortcuts of a typical sitcom.<\/p>\n He explained: \u201cI think the nature of the show, because it\u2019s about living people and dead people, you\u2019re never going to have that ending of \u2018they all move to Greece!\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s an inherent division that we have to service so I suppose, in some ways, it was unavoidable that there was going to be a degree of melancholy.\u201d<\/p> Rickard continued: \u201cIt\u2019s not like, \u2018oh, they go their separate ways\u2019. At the beginning of the pilot, in the greatest possible sense of the word, they\u2019ve already gone their separate ways. And so we have to try to stay true to that division in some way.\u201d<\/p>\n The writer and actor \u2013 who plays both caveman Robin and nobleman Sir Humphrey Bone \u2013 previously teased<\/a> that the final episode would be \u201cunexpected\u201d and \u201ctonally different\u201d to season 5\u2019s Last Resort.<\/p>\n Whatever happens, the Ghosts finale is bound to be emotional for the legion of fans who have come to love the show, but co-creator Mathew Baynton assured that the festive theme helps to lighten the mood.<\/p>\n \u201cThe obligation to make sure that we kept this episode Christmassy was a huge boon to the episode itself, because otherwise it would have been pretty straight down the line sad at the end \u2013 without much to kind of leaven that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut the Christmassiness of it, I think gives it the sweet against the bitter.\u201d<\/p>\n Baynton went on to detail the careful thought that went into this concluding chapter, with all six creators \u2013 including himself, Rickard, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick and Ben Willbond \u2013 voicing their own ideas.<\/p>\n He explained: \u201cWe just wanted to do something that we all felt was a fitting end. And in many ways \u2013 I hope this doesn\u2019t sound wrong \u2013 but no one could love the show more than us.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cSo if we\u2019d disappointed ourselves, we\u2019d be disappointing the fans, and hopefully, if we have satisfied ourselves, it will satisfy the fans. So it takes a good idea to satisfy everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n The synopsis for the episode reads: \u201cChristmas is just around the corner and Mike\u2019s mum, Betty, is staying. Although she is just trying to be helpful, Mike and Alison soon lose patience with her interfering ways. There\u2019s no easy way to ask her to go home so the couple (and the Ghosts) struggle on, with Button House feeling fuller than ever.<\/p>\n \u201cNow a Christmas convert, Robin is missing that all important \u2018Christmassy\u2019 feeling, so the gang share their secrets to getting into the festive spirit.
