It is a great time in the world of Doctor Who<\/a> right now, with fans waiting patiently for the Christmas episode<\/a> to land in a week and the new season to be released in due course.<\/p>\n Well, to mark the exciting occasion, fans will be pleased to learn that they can find out more about the new era and returning showrunner Russell T Davies<\/a> in BBC One\u2019s Imagine\u2026 Russell T Davies: The Doctor and Me<\/a>.<\/p>\n The special episode aired tonight (Monday 18th December) and went behind the scenes at Cardiff\u2019s Bad Wolf Studios to see the upcoming Doctor Who season being filmed and to follow Davies as he makes his anticipated return to the show.<\/p>\n Well, in the one-off special, Davies spoke about Christopher Eccleston\u2019s Doctor, who was at the helm of the series in 2005.<\/p> Davies said: \u201cI had to keep all the good iconography but dust off all the rubbish. Part of the rubbish was kind of pompousness around the character.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a Time Lord, so in people\u2019s minds, he\u2019s become a lord, someone loquacious and pompous and ostentatious and posh. So Chris singlehandedly, in one moment, shook that off.\u201d<\/p>\n More recently, Eccleston has lent his voice acting talents to Big Finish\u2019s Once and Future \u2013 Time Lord Immemorial<\/a>, but was the Ninth Doctor in the series, travelling with companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) before passing the baton to David Tennant\u2019s Tenth Doctor.<\/p>\n Davies also touched upon the casting of Piper in Imagine, who became a fan favourite as Rose.<\/p>\n \u201cYou forget, 2005, 2004, people were laughing, going, \u2018Oh, you\u2019ve cast that pop star. What\u2019s Billie Piper like?\u2019 Like, thinking she\u2019d be dreadful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI can remember all of us on the production having this massive silent smile thinking, \u2018You wait. You wait \u2019til you see her. It\u2019s phenomenal.’\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n As well as chats about his previous tenure as showrunner, the new Imagine episode chronicled the events leading up to Davies\u2019s return, as he takes on having two Doctors<\/a> and even bigger ambitions for the series.<\/p>\n As well as getting a behind-the-scenes sneak peek, the episode followed Davies as he toured the enormous sound stages and met \u201cNcuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor, ahead of his eagerly anticipated tenure as the Time Lord following the unexpected regeneration of David Tennant\u201d.<\/p>\n According to the synopsis: \u201cAlan Yentob traces the evolution of [Davies\u2019s] writing, from his beginnings in BBC children\u2019s TV to finding his voice as a queer writer on Channel 4\u2019s landmark gay series Queer as Folk and to more recent successes, including 2021\u2019s critically acclaimed AIDS drama, It\u2019s a Sin.<\/p>\n \u201cThe film also features interviews with David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Ncuti Gatwa, Helena Bonham Carter, Olly Alexander, Sally Wainwright and Caitlin Moran.\u201d<\/p> \n
