Inspired by the novel of the same name by Alice Hunter<\/a>, the show follows Beth Fairchild (Scholey) after her husband, Tom (Jack Farthing), is arrested at his birthday party on suspicion of murdering his former assistant.<\/p>\n Initially confident of his innocence, Beth is forced to ask serious questions as an increasing number of deaths are linked to her disgraced spouse \u2013 and her own past comes under scrutiny.<\/p>\n \u201cThe character is brilliant,\u201d said Scholey in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cShe goes through every possible emotion a human can go through. And it was a bit of a challenge for me physically, with the sexual nature of the character.<\/p>\n \u201cI was quite terrified by the idea of doing all of that. I thought, \u2018well, I should probably do that then because it\u2019s obviously something I need to work through there \u2013 therapy\u2019.\u201d<\/p> \u00a0<\/p>\n Another draw for Scholey was the cast, as the Being Human alum expressed a desire to work with Farthing, Angela Griffin and Luke Treadaway, while the enormous popularity of Hunter\u2019s novel also won her trust.<\/p>\n She added: \u201cI was really excited by that combination. The scripts are fantastic. I know the book\u2019s hugely popular, even though it\u2019s not the same, so I knew that we had an audience before we even started \u2013 so that\u2019s always helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n Co-star Griffin went on to explain that screenwriters Ben Morris and Suzanne Cowie have made changes that keep the show \u201csurprising\u201d to readers of the novel, but \u201cthe essence is still there\u201d.<\/p>\n Of her own character, DI Aline Edgeworth, the actor added: \u201cShe\u2019s very emotionless. She\u2019s very driven. She\u2019s got dogged determination in solving crimes.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s like a dog with a bone once she gets a detail, and she will use everything to discover whatever it is that she needs to discover at the time. And it all hides that she lives a very passionless life.\u201d<\/p>\n Griffin teased: \u201cThat\u2019s probably because she\u2019s covering something up that we might find out about.\u201d<\/p>\n The Serial Killer\u2019s Wife is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
