Comparisons between the two shows were bound to happen, as both are adapted from Cornwell\u2019s novels<\/a>, although notably they are produced by entirely different creative teams and do not inhabit a shared universe.<\/p>\n In addition, The Last Kingdom had somewhat more of an action focus, whereas The Winter King<\/a> contains more political intrigue \u2013 partly as a result of Arthur\u2019s high status in ancient Britain.<\/p>\n While appearing as a guest on ITVX\u2019s official The Winter King podcast<\/a>, Cornwell compared and contrasted his two heroes, outlining precisely what sets them apart.<\/p> \u201cHe has greater responsibility than Uhtred,\u201d he began. \u201cOne of the things that I tried to stress in the books is that there never was a \u2018King Arthur\u2019. I mean, nothing in the records suggests he was ever a king.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was called a warlord, the leader of battles. And that\u2019s what Arthur is in the books and in the series. He\u2019s a warrior. But he\u2019s a very thoughtful warrior and a very responsible warrior.\u201d<\/p>\n Cornwell continued: \u201cAnd he has responsibilities that Uhtred doesn\u2019t have. Uhtred\u2019s loyalties are towards Bebbanburg and his own people. He doesn\u2019t have to make decisions that affect the fate of the whole nation; Arthur does.\u201d<\/p>\n The Last Kingdom fans will recall that Bebbanburg is Uhtred\u2019s ancestral home, which was unjustly taken from him at a young age and became a key location in the show as the warrior attempted to reclaim it.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Arthur is the illegitimate and outcast son of Uther (Eddie Marsan), the king of Dumnonia, who is called back to save the land when it is left vulnerable to attack.<\/p>\n The author added: \u201cSo Arthur is a more thoughtful person.
